Onyenwere Named UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of Week
December 17, 2019 | Women's Basketball
Junior forward Michaela Onyenwere of the UCLA women's basketball team has been named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Dec. 9-15.
Onyenwere scored a game-high-tying 19 points and added nine rebounds and one assist to help the Bruins defeat Pacific, 68-57, on Dec. 15. She was 7-for-15 from the field, 1-for-2 from three-point range and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in 24 minutes of action. The win helped UCLA improve to 9-0 on the year, its best start since the 2010-11 season when the Bruins opened that campaign 10-0. The best start in school history is 12-0, made by the 1980-81 squad that finished 29-7 overall and was ranked 7th in the final Associated Press Poll.
Onyenwere, the Bruins' leader in scoring (19.2 rpg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg), saw her streak of 20 or more points come to an end at four with the 19 against the Tigers. She already has five games with 20 or more points this season (23 in her career).
This is Onyenwere's second UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week award of the season and fourth of her career.
