Dean Makes History as UCLA Blasts Washington State, 83-56

February 01, 2019 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – Senior Japreece Dean broke UCLA's record for consecutive free throw makes, and the Bruins outrebounded Washington State by 24 en route to defeating the Cougars 83-56 on Friday night at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.

With 4:27 left in the third quarter, Dean knocked down her first of five free throws on the night, which gave her 33 consecutive makes. This broke Michelle Greco's record of 32 set in 2002-03. The senior guard finished with 11 points and had no turnovers in 29 minutes. She went 5-for-5 from the line and now has 37 straight makes.

Sophomore Michaela Onyenwere collected her eighth double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Lajahna Drummer also had a double-double, posting 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior Kennedy Burke scored 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting, and sophomore Lauryn Miller came off the bench to tally 10 points and grab six rebounds.

The Storyline
The first quarter was tight, featuring three ties and one lead change. Drummer scored six points and had four rebounds in the opening 10 minutes alone, and she and Onyenwere combined for six offensive boards, helping UCLA (12-9, 5-4) have six second-chance points. The Cougars (7-14, 2-8) hit four of their last five from the field to keep it close, however, creating a one-point game going into the second quarter.

Five straight points by Onyenwere extended UCLA's lead to 24-18, and then Miller scored on the put-back to stretch the advantage to eight. UCLA's swarming defense helped the Bruins score 13 points off turnovers, and they also had eight second-chance points in the opening 20 minutes. UCLA outscored Washington State 18-7 in the second quarter to take a 12-point lead into the locker room.

Washington State crept its way back in the third frame thanks to some hot outside shooting, getting as close as six (46-40) before UCLA used an 8-0 run to go up 14. The Bruins kept a safe distance for the remainder of the affair, extending their advantage to 16 (57-41) after an and-one by Drummer.

The Bruins continued to push in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Cougars 23-12 to balloon the final margin to 27. Washington State got as close as 16 (68-52) before UCLA fired back with seven unanswered points, capped by a bucket inside by Onyenwere on the assist from Burke to make it 75-52 Bruins with 4:03 left to go.

Key Stats of the Game
28 – UCLA scored 28 points off 19 Washington State turnovers, compared to only five points for the Cougars.
24 – The Bruins were +24 on the glass, outrebounding the Cougars, 51-27. This translated into a 16-3 edge in second-chance points.
