MVB Brings Down Eagles in Three

The No. 6 UCLA men's volleyball team dealt Concordia a straight set decision in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match played on Wednesday night in Irvine. Scores of the contest were 25-17, 26-24, 25-17. UCLA, which held CUI to a .101 hitting percentage, improved its record to 11-4 on the year and 3-0 in MPSF action. The Bruins will return home to host No. 14 USC (1-2) in another MPSF battle on Sunday at 5 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion, presented by Wescom.
In set one, the Bruins stormed out to a 5-1 advantage only to see the Eagles come right back to even the score at 6-all. UCLA moved ahead 10-8, but CUI managed to pull even at 10. A kill from Austin Matautia put the Bruins in front, at 12-11, and was followed by an ace from Micah Ma'a. Back-to-back kills by Matautia extended UCLA's lead to 18-13. A Brandon Rattray blast made it 21-16. Daenan Gyimah put away an overpass for a 24-17 lead and Ma'a finished the set with another ace. UCLA hit .517 for the frame, with Rattray totaling five kills.
UCLA moved ahead 8-6 after a kill from Sam Kobrine in set two. The score was then even at points 8 through 10. Concordia tallied three straight on a block and a pair of Bruin errors to open a 10-13 gap. UCLA battled back to level the score at 15's after a kill by Rattray. The score was then tied at 16 through 18, when the Eagles once again rattled off three straight. UCLA came right back on kills by Rattray and Gymiah to go along with an Eagle error to force a 21-all tie. Kills by Matautia leveled the score at 23 and again at 24-all, saving a set point. Rattray then ended the set with consecutive aces.
The Bruins broke a 5-all tie in set three with a kill from Sam Kobrine and a Ma'a / Matautia block to take a 7-5 lead. A block by Ma'a / Gyimah extended the margin to 11-7. CUI closed to 14-13 following a Bruin error, but UCLA answered with a Matautia kill and a triple block from Ma'a, Matautia and Maleski for a 16-13 advantage. Rattray delivered a big hit for a 22-16 lead and kills from Sam Kobrine and then Matautia finished off the Eagles at 25-17.

The Bruins also won the battle at the net 8.0 total blocks to 6.0. UCLA had a seven to four edge in aces, led by a career-high tying four from Rattray who paced the attack with 13 kills. Gyimah finished with 11 kills and hit over .500 in a match (.529) for the 10th time this season. Ma'a recorded a team season-best of 11 digs for the match.
