No. 1 UCLA Posts Two More Sweeps in Hawaii

HONOLULUย -- No. 1 UCLA ran its 2019 record to 3-0 with two more sweeps on Saturday at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamokuย Beach Classic at Queen's Beach. The Bruins opened with a 5-0 victory over No. 10/11 Stanford and then ended the day with a 5-0 win over Saint Mary's.
In the morning win over the Cardinal, the Bruins shifted their lineup with everyone moving up a court, allowing Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara a day of rest. Senior Izzy Carey and sophomore Megan Muretย got things off to a good start with a dominant straight-set win on court four over Melissa Dailey and Morgan Hentz, 21-10, 21-9.
Then a new partnership formed asย juniorย Madi Yeomansย stepped onto court five for her first match of the season with a freshman, Lindsey Sparks, playing in her first collegiate dual. The duo proved to be too much for Stanford's Blake Sharp and Jordan McKinney to handle as UCLA picked up another point in straight sets, 21-13, 21-5.
Junior Lily Justine and senior Sarah Sponcilย moved to court one and defeated the Cardinal's Sunny Villapando and Charlie Ekstromย in two sets, 21-12, 21-19, to provide the clinching point for the Bruins' dual victory over Stanford.
Freshman Abby Van Winkle and senior Zana Munoย moved to court two and won two tightly contested sets over Stanford's Tori Ashkinos and Courtney Bowen, 21-18, 21-16.
Court three would take three sets to decide the final point, but when the sand settled, junior Savvy Simo and sophomore Mac May rallied to defeat the Cardinal's Morgan Hentz and Maddieย Dailey, 18-21, 21-13, 15-10.

The new partnership ofย juniorย Madi Yeomansย andย freshmanย Lindsey Sparks improved to 2-0 on the year on court five with an easy win over the Gaels' Blake Sharp and Jordan McKinney, 21-9, 21-11.
Junior Savvy Simo and sophomore Mac May made straight-set work of SMC's Alexsaย Parker and Sienna Young, 21-18, 21-12 to clinch the dual victory for the Bruins.
Freshman Abby Van Winkle and senior Zana Munoย were tested on court two but dominated in the final set over Emily Bible and Lindsey Calvin, 21-17, 15-21, 15-6, to put UCLA up 4-0.
Junior Lily Justine and senior Sarah Sponcilย won a three-set thriller to keep the Bruins' 5-0 sweep streak alive, defeating Sarah Chase and Lindsey Knudsen, 21-16, 19-21, 15-13.
The Bruins return to action in the tournament at Queen's Beach against two top five teams tomorrow. UCLA will open up with No. 6/5 Hawai'i at 12:30 p.m. PT and then conclude play with No. 3/4 Pepperdineย at 3:30 p.m. PT.
