UCLA Breaks Away Late, Tops Utah 76-60

LOS ANGELES – Sophomore Michaela Onyenwere matched a career-high with 29 points, as both she and senior Japreece Dean earned double-doubles to help No. 25 UCLA to a 76-60 win over Utah on Friday night at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
Notching her 14th 20-plus point performance of the season, Onyenwere ultimately finished with 29 points and a career-high tying 13 rebounds. With her first two points of the night, Onyenwere eclipsed the 500-point mark for the season, making her the seventh UCLA sophomore to do so in program history.
Dean dished out a career-high 10 dimes and had 11 points, while senior Kennedy Burke shot 9-for-15 for 19 points to go along with four steals and six rebounds. Redshirt senior Lajahna Drummer also scored in double figures with 11 points, and she tied a career high with three blocks.
UCLA improved to 18-11 on the year and 11-6 in Pac-12 play. The Bruins have won nine of their last 11 games.
The Storyline
The first quarter was back and forth early on before the Bruins used a 12-0 run to go up 18-8, getting seven assists on eight made baskets and holding the Utes scoreless for over five minutes to cap the opening frame.
The Utes (20-8, 9-8) cut into UCLA's lead in the second quarter, making three straight shots to pull within six (24-18). A 3-pointer by Dean made it 29-22 Bruins before Utah closed the second stanza with a 7-1 run to pull within three (30-27) at halftime.
UCLA was just 1-for-11 from deep in the first half but had 10 second-chance points compared to none by the Utes.
The Bruins were all over the place in the third quarter, getting hustle plays and layups from Burke and consecutive chances on the offensive glass to extend their lead to double digits (43-33).
Consecutive baskets by Onyenwere kept UCLA up 10 (50-40), as the sophomore earned her 11th double-double of the season in the third frame.
Back to back three's by Dean helped the Bruins to a 56-45 lead entering the fourth quarter, and UCLA led by as many as 22 en route to completing the sweep of Utah.
