WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bruins have their Pac-12 bye week, but are not off from competition, closing out next weekend with a pair of games on the campus of CSUN. On Sunday, March 24, UCLA will face Saint Mary's at 12:15 p.m. and CSUN at 2:15 p.m. The Bruins then return home with non-conference games at Easton Stadium against UC Santa Barbara on Monday, March 25 at 6 p.m. and Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday, March 26 at 5 p.m.

BRUINS IN THE POLLS
UCLA checks in at No. 1 in all three national polls (NFCA/USA Softball/Softball America) this week. The Bruins were selected first in the preseason Pac-12 Conference coaches poll.

MEGAN FARAIMO NAMED PAC-12 FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
For the third time this season, Megan Faraimo has been named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday. Faraimo did not allow a run in 12 innings of work last weekend, totaling 16 strikeouts and limiting opponents to six hits and one walk.

On Friday (March 8), Faraimo struck out 12 in a one-hit shutout of Robert Morris. She was perfect for the first 4 1/3 innings before surrendering a one-out double in the fifth. It would be the lone Robert Morris baserunner allowed by the freshman, who struck out the first six batters of the game. Faraimo added two more strikeouts in the third, fourth and fifth frames.

Two days later, Faraimo fanned four in a complete-game, five-hit shutout over Boston U, giving up one walk. She had two strikeouts in the first and posted 1-2-3 innings in the second, fifth and seventh.

Faraimo also earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors on Feb. 19 and Feb. 26. It is the 17th FOW award for the Bruins since the award began in 2016. Faraimo matches redshirt junior Rachel Garcia for weekly accolades, as Garcia has thrice been named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 12, 19 and 26).

RACHEL GARCIA NAMED SEMIFINALIST FOR JAMES E. SULLIVAN AWARD
Redshirt junior Rachel Garcia has been named a semifinalist for the 89th AAU James E. Sullivan Award, as announced on Monday. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding amateur athlete in the United States.

"I am extremely honored and humbled to be considered for the James E. Sullivan Award," Garcia said. "I am blessed to be surrounded by family, teammates and coaches that give me the love, support and training I need to be successful at this level playing the sport I truly am passionate about. I owe it all to them."

Fans can vote for Garcia here once a day through Friday at 8:59 p.m. PT when the semifinalist round ends. Finalists will be named on March 20 and the AAU James E. Sullivan Award presentation will be held at the New York Athletic Club on April 16.

In 2018, Garcia was named the Honda Sport Award winner for softball, while also earning USA Softball, NFCA and ESPNW National Player of the Year honors. Her other accolades included Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year, NFCA First Team All-American, NFCA First Team All-Region and All-Pac-12 First Team. Garcia produced a 29-4 record in the circle with a 1.31 earned run average and 315 strikeouts in 208 innings. The four-time Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, two-time NFCA National Pitcher of the Week and two-time USA Softball National Player of the Week also hit .339 with 11 home runs and 54 runs batted in.

During the summer as part of the 2018 USA Softball National Team World Championship roster, Garcia had a 1.05 earned run average with 13 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings at the 2018 WBSC Women's World Championship, helping the U.S. win gold and qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. She also won gold at the International Cup.

The AAU James E. Sullivan Award has been presented annually since 1930 as a salute to the founder and past president of the Amateur Athletic Union.

UCLA also trailed 4-2 to No. 16 Kentucky on Feb. 23 before scoring 10 unanswered runs to mercy the Wildcats ... sophomore Briana Perez led off the March 8 game against Robert Morris with an inside-the-park home run. It marked the first inside-the-park homer for the Bruins since Andrea Duran on June 3, 2006 versus Texas ... Perez set new career highs with four hits and five runs batted in against Boston. The three runs scored also tied a personal best. The sophomore leads the Bruins with 13 multiple-hit games and has scored a run in 18 of 23 contests ... redshirt sophomore Aaliyah Jordan has six doubles in her last three games, including three versus Liberty on March 9 to become the sixth Bruin ever to post three two-baggers in the same contest.
