LOS ANGELES -- No. 1 UCLA improved to 15-0 on the year with its second-straight 5-0 sweep of Pepperdine without dropping a set in 11 days on Saturday afternoon at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. It was also the third win over the Waves this season and gave the Bruins a 7-6 lead in the all-time series.
In the win over the Waves, sophomore Lea Monkhouse and junior Savvy Simo got the Bruins on the board first with a straight-set win on court four over Nikki Lyons and Maddie Dilfer, 21-13, 21-18.
Junior Lily Justine and senior Sarah Sponcil made it 2-0 UCLA on court two with a straight-set win over Gigi Hernandez and Heidi Dyer, 21-14, 22-20.
The win was sealed on court one when Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara took down Pepperdine's Deahna Kraft and Brook Bauer in straight sets, 21-13, 21-18.
UCLA freshman Abby Van Winkle and senior Zana Muno remained undefeated at 14-0, put the Bruins up 4-0 with a straight-set win on court three over the Waves' Alexis Filippone and Skylar Caputo, 28-26, 21-19.
Then freshman Lindsey Sparks and senior Izzy Carey completed the sweep on court five with a straight-set win over Simone Priebe and Katie Gavin, 21-16, 21-10. The win for Carey was the 102nd of her career, which ties the all-time UCLA career record with Elise Zappia.
In exhibition play, sophomores Mac May and Megan Muret posted a straight-set win over Melanie Paul and Jenna Tunnell, 21-19, 21-12.
The Bruins return to action on Tuesday, March 26 when they host Oregon (12:30 p.m.) and Loyola Marymount (2:30 p.m.) at Ocean Park Beach in Santa Monica, Calif.
