MVB Sweeps Ohio State

The No. 5 UCLA men's volleyball team swept past Ohio State in Friday night action at USC's Galen Center in the Pac-12 / Big Ten Challenge. Scores of the match were 25-21, 25-20, 25-21. UCLA, now 15-4 on the season, will meet Penn State on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. as the Pac-12 / Big Ten Challenge continues at the Galen Center.
 
In set one, UCLA used a kill and a service ace from Sam Kobrine to open up a 7-5 lead. UCLA led 9-6 after a Austin Matautia / Daenan Gyimah block. Ohio State closed to one point at 12-11, 14-13 and 15-14. A Grant Maleski kill made it 18-15. The Bruins extended the margin to 20-16 following a Matautia block. The Buckeyes came back within two at 20-18, but Gyimah answered with a kill. A Kobrine kill made it 24-20 and the Bruins took the set after an OSU service error. The Bruins hit .333 for the set to .042 for Ohio State.
 
UCLA moved out to a 7-3 lead in set two following an ace from Micah Ma'a. The Bruins extended the margin to 12-6 after a Ma'a / Matautia block. Ohio State rallied to trail 15-13, but UCLA responded with a run to take a 20-15 lead. A Brandon Rattray kill made it 23-19. A kill from Matautia ended the set at 25-20. UCLA hit .056, but the Buckeyes were at -.158.
 
The Bruins grabbed the early lead in set three at 6-4. The Buckeyes evened the score at 6-all. Kills by Ma'a and Sam Kobrine made it 8-6. A Matautia kill extended the margin to 12-9. OSU answered with three straight to level to score at 12's. A kill and ace from Gyimah lifted the Bruins into a 14-12 lead. Ohio State leveled the score at 15-all. UCLA opened up a 20-18 advantage on a Gyimah swing. The Buckeyes battled back to tie the score at 21-each. A Maleski kill and then a Maleski / Kobrine block handed the Bruins a 23-21 lead. J.R. Norris then served the Bruins home with help from a kill from Matautia which ended the set at 25-21. The Bruins hit .476 for the frame.
 
Matautia topped UCLA with nine kills and hit .353. Gyimah hit over .400 for the 15th match this season (.500) while adding seven kills and five blocks. Maleski tied his career-best with two aces to go with four kills (.364) and four blocks, including a solo block. For the match, UCLA outhit the Buckeyes .297 to .017. It marked the sixth match this season the opponent has failed to crack the .200 hitting percentage. The Bruins totaled five aces to three for OSU. UCLA doubled up Ohio State at the net with 10.0 total blocks.
 
Next week, UCLA returns to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play with road matches at BYU (Mar. 14) and Stanford (Mar. 16).
