No. 6 Women's Tennis Completes Road Sweep
March 09, 2019 | Women's Tennis
TUCSON, Ariz. โ The No. 6 UCLA women's tennis team opened Pac-12 play with a road sweep, defeating Arizona 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center. The outcome was decided at 4-2 before the final match was played out.
Abi Altick clinched the win in straight sets for the Bruins (9-2, 2-0) as momentum was slowly shifting to the home team. Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart also posted straight-set victories to give UCLA a sweep of the top courts. Alaina Miller retired in her second set against Talya Zandberg of the Wildcats (8-5, 0-2) to make it 3-2. Gitte Heynemans and Sophia Thomas added wins for Arizona.
The tone was set early on each doubles court and there was little straying off course. Playing on the top court for the second straight day, 16th-ranked Bolton and Hart of the Bruins went down an early break against Thomas and Emma Wilson. Bolton-Hart picked up two of the next three games, but that would be all in a 6-2 loss.
Playing together for the first time since the 2016-17 season, the all-senior UCLA duo of Miller and Gabby Andrews took to Court 2. The pair broke Heynemans and Camila Wesbrooks early and did not surrender another game en route to a 6-2 win.
That left the doubles point to be decided on Court 3, the Bruin combination of Altick and Taylor Johnson was already well on its way to victory. The pair broke Zandberg and Marie Van Aelst at 2-2 and never looked back, cruising to a 6-2 win and the first point of the day. Altick-Johnson is now 5-1 on the season, 4-1 in dual matches.
No. 10 Bolton picked up her team-high 17th win in a dominant performance against Wesbrooks on Court 2. The Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. native dropped just two second-set games to give UCLA a 2-0 lead. The win marked Bolton's first in Pac-12 play.
Johnson had a tougher go of it on Court 5, where Heynemans dealt the freshman a 6-1, 6-1 loss to cut the Wildcats' deficit in half.
No. 64 Jada Hart, who had five of her first six dual matches left unfinished, won her fourth in a row without dropping a set Saturday. She dispatched Wilson 6-4, 6-2 on the top court to move the Bruins one step closer to victory.
Miller and Zandberg battled to a first-set tiebreaker on Court 4, which the Wildcat claimed by a 7-4 score. Miller was unable to recover in the second set, ultimately retiring at 0-3 to give Arizona its second win of the day.
Altick, ranked No. 110 by Oracle ITA, doubled up Van Aelst in the first set on Court 3. The junior from Belgium gave the Wildcats life with consecutive gameย wins to make it 5-5, but Altick notched a big break at 6-5 to seal the deal. The Monroe, La. native has now clinched a team-high three matches on the year.
Andrews, who dropped her first set against Thomas on Court 6, came back strong in the second to answer. The victory eventually went the way of Arizona, however, as Thomas controlled a third-set tiebreaker on the way to a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(1) win.
The Bruins will take a short break from conference action next week, as they head to Pepperdine Wednesday to take on the No. 23 Waves. First serve from the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center is set for 1 p.m.
