UCLA Beats Washington in Top-15 Road Showdown
April 14, 2019 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE โ The No. 10 UCLA women's tennis team defeated No. 15 Washington 4-1 Sunday at Nordstrom Tennis Center. It was a convincing bounce-back performance for the Bruins, who suffered the first road loss of their conference campaign Friday.
It was a big day for seniors Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield, who teamed for an all-or-nothing doubles victory before also notching singles wins. It was also a two-win match for freshman Elysia Bolton, who helped the Bruins improve to 15-6 (7-2 in Pac-12 play). Sedona Gallagher turned in the lone singles win of the day for the Huskies, who dropped to 17-3 (7-2).
The pairs traded holds of serve to open play on Court 2. Bruins Bolton and Jada Hart settled in, though, securing four of the next five games to take control. Zoey Weil and Vanessa Wong followed with a hold, but Bolton-Hart would seal the day's first win upon getting back on serve. The victory marked the eighth in a row for the nation's No. 12 team, which is 24-7 on the season.
The Huskies would pull even on Court 3, where Natsuho Arakawa and Kenadi Hance dealt Taylor Johnson and Alaina Miller a 6-3 defeat. Arakawa-Hance powered back from a 2-3 deficit to claim the home team's first win of the day.
With pressure intensified on Court 1, fifth-ranked Andrews and Broomfield of UCLA looked to capitalize on an early break. Back on serve and leading 5-3, the tandem closed out 26th-ranked Stacey Fung and Nika Zupancic for the day's first point. The win marked a team-high sixth against nationally-ranked opponents for Andrews-Broomfield.
UCLA picked up three singles first sets to keep them on track for the overall win.
No. 25 Bolton gave the Bruins a cushion on Court 2, notching a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win on Court 2 to make it 2-0. Playing against Wong, Bolton trailed 2-4 in the first set before rallying to take the final four games. The players were even at 3-3 in the second frame before Bolton took control on the way to her team-high 23rd singles victory.
Andrews dominated her first set against Hance on Court 6, but the second one was not nearly as easy. The Bruin senior, playing in her ninth singles dual match, was on the verge of entering a second-set tiebreaker before picking up a clutch deuce point for the win. The UCLA lead was 3-0.
No. 122 Altick of UCLA came out on the wrong end of a first-set tiebreaker against Gallagher, putting her behind the eight ball. Gallagher went on to a 7-6(5), 6-2 win, getting the Huskies on the board with three matches remaining.
Broomfield would not let the match get any deeper, posting a dominating performance in her third set on Court 3. The Toronto, ON, Canada native and Arakawa traded 6-3 sets, making it a one-frame affair. Broomfield would not surrender any games there for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 result.
UCLA will conclude the regular season with a trip across town to face rival USC on Saturday, April 20. First serve from Marks Tennis Stadium is scheduled for 11 a.m.
