No. 2 USC defeats No. 3 UCLA, 9-4

STANFORD, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA (22-6) fell to No. 2 USC (25-1) in the semifinals of the MPSF Championship on Saturday afternoon, 9-4, at Stanford's Avery Aquatics Center.
Four different Bruins led the team in scoring with one goal apiece. Senior Carlee Kapana got the starting nod in the cage for UCLA and went the distance, registering six saves while allowing nine goals.
The Bruins trailed 1-0 at the end of the first period as Bayley Weber scored the only goal of the period for the Trojans.
USC won the second period, 3-2, to build a 4-2 lead at the break. Freshman Bella Baia scored the first goal for the Bruins on a counter at 4:46. Then senior Lizette Rozeboom cut the deficit to 3-2 with a strike from the front court (2:09).
Both teams battled to a 1-1 tie in the third period with the Trojans taking a 5-3 lead into the fourth quarter. Junior Bronte Halligan scored the only goal of the third period for UCLA on a power play with 0:07 left in the quarter.
Senior Maddie Musselman scored the only goal for UCLA in the fourth period with a power play goal (5:39) to cut the deficit to 6-4. But the Trojans scored the last three goals of the game to provide the 9-4 final.
UCLA returns to action tomorrow in the third-place game tomorrow against No. 4 California at 1:00 p.m. PT at Stanford's Avery Aquatics Center.
