Junior pitcher Ryan Garcia from the UCLA baseball team has been named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Apr. 22-28.
Garcia threw a complete game two-hit shutout to lead top-ranked UCLA to a 5-0 win over Utah on Friday night, striking out a career-high 14 batters, the most in a single game by a Pac-12 pitcher this year. Garcia allowed just three baserunners all night, none of whom advanced past first base. He retired the first eight and final 11 batters of the game. Garcia became the first UCLA pitcher to log a complete game shutout since Griffin Canning at Oregon on May 25, 2017, and his 14 strikeouts were the most by a Bruin pitcher since Trevor Bauer in 2011. Achieving another first since Bauer in 2011, Garcia took home Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors for the third time this season as is one of just five Bruins ever to earn the honors three times in a year.
This is Garcia's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week award this season and of his career.
Also Nominated: Ayan Broomfield, W. Tennis; Cole Madey, M. Golf; Briana Perez, Softball; Harrison Schrage, Track & Field.
