April 29, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
A pair of Bruins, setter Micah Ma'a and middle blocker Daenan Gyimah, were named on Monday to the 2019 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) men's Division I-II first-team All-America squad.
Ma'a, who was also a first-team AVCA All-America choice in 2016 and 2018, ranked third in the NCAA in service ace average (0.64) this season while setting a school single-season record with 67 service aces. Earlier this season, he became the first Bruin player to surpass the 200 service ace mark for a career to become the all-time school ace leader (finished with 208). Ma'a had 13 matches with at least three aces during the year. He set UCLA to a .323 hitting percentage this season which ranked among the nation's five-best marks. The senior also produced the only triple-double in men's volleyball this season with a 15-kill, 44-set assist, 15-dig effort against BYU.
Gyimah, who was a first-team selection last season, rates fourth in the NCAA with a .435 hitting percentage. The junior totaled 17 matches in 2019 with at least a .400 hitting percentage and had a streak of 13 straight such matches during the year. Gyimah set a school record when he hit .917 (11 kills, 0 errors, 12 attacks) in a match earlier this season at McKendree. This season, he recorded 16 double-digit kill matches with a new career-best of 25 kills in a contest versus Stanford.
The 2019 AVCA selections were made by the AVCA Division I-II Men's Volleyball All-America Committee consisting of ten coaches representing schools from across the nation. The full team selections are listed below. The TeamSnap/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Year will be announced at the NCAA Championship Banquet on May 1.
