STANFORD, Calif. -- No. 1 UCLA improved to 25-0 on the year with a 4-1 win over No. 12 California (14-5) on Saturday afternoon in the Pac-12 North Tournament at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium.
Seniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara got the Bruins on the board first for UCLA with a straight-set win on court one over Chloe Luyties and Jordan Polo, 21-8, 21-13.
UCLA's senior Sarah Sponcil and junior Lily Justine put the Bruins up 2-0 with a straight-set win on court two over Cal's Maddie Micheletti and Caroline Schafer, 21-18, 21-16.
Freshman Lindsey Sparks and senior Izzy Carey clinched the dual on court five again with a straight-set win over the Golden Bears' Mia Merino and Abby Waldburger, 21-16, 21-14.
Sophomore Lea Monkhouse and junior Savvy Simo made it 4-0 with a straight-set win on court four, beating California's Madison Dueck and Alexia Inman, 21-12, 21-15.
The lone casualty on the day was the Bruins' last remaining undefeated pair of freshman Abby Van Winkle and senior Zana Muno, who dropped a three-set heartbreaker to Cal's Grace Campbell and Ivan Lindahl on court three, 16-21, 21-16, 15-13.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow at the Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium at 9:00 a.m. PT when they take on No. 2 USC.
