UCLA Rowing Concludes Day One in San Diego

SAN DIEGO โ€“ All four UCLA rowing crews advanced to Grand Final races on the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday morning.

The Bruins' varsity eight finished third in its six-boat heat on Saturday, while the Bruins' second varsity eight registered a second-place finish. In addition, UCLA's varsity four crew finished second in a five-boat heat, and the novice eight crew posted a third-place finish in a seven-boat heat.

"We are pleased with the performances of every Bruin crew today," head coach Amy Fuller Kearney said. "The team showed up ready to race hard and represent UCLA well. We are looking forward to continuing our climb in the Grand Finals tomorrow."

UCLA's two varsity eight crews and novice eight crew, along with two varsity four crews, will compete in Grand Final races on Sunday morning on Mission Bay.

The varsity eight (V8+) registered a time of 6:35.596, going up against two programs currently ranked among the nation's top three. No. 1-ranked Washington won the heat with a time of 6:24.206, while No. 3-ranked Stanford posted a time of 6:25.930. The Bruins crossed the finish line ahead of Tennessee (6:45.386), Gonzaga (6:47.214) and San Diego State (6:57.044).

UCLA's second varsity eight (2V8+) clocked in with a time of 6:58.467, behind No. 1-ranked Washington (6:45.479). Tennessee finished third with a time of 7:02.303. Sacramento State (7:06.859) finished fourth, followed by Drexel (7:12.013) and St. Mary's (7:38.561).

The varsity four crew (V4+) finished with a second-place time of 7:47.097, crossing the finish line less than 10 seconds behind No. 2-ranked California (7:37.873). Gonzaga finished third in the race, with a time of 8:03.083. San Diego (8:05.223) finished fourth, followed by Sacramento State (8:18.303).

UCLA's novice eight (N8+) finished third in its heat, posting a time of 7:21.822. UCLA finished behind first-place Texas (6:57.932) and Washington (7:00.344). The Bruins' crew crossed the finish line ahead of Oklahoma (7:28.290), Wisconsin (7:30.620), Sacramento State (7:37.614) and UC San Diego (8:09.600).

Sunday's races for the Bruins will begin at approximately 8:32 a.m. The Grand Final for the varsity four (V4+) is slated to begin at 8:32 a.m. Following that race, UCLA's novice eight (N8+) will race at 8:56 a.m. The Bruins' second varsity eight will race at 9:44 a.m., with the varsity eight crew taking the water at 10:32 a.m. UCLA's second varsity four (2V4+) will compete at 11:48 a.m.
