Women's Tennis Blanks Huskies to Earn Orlando Trip
May 10, 2019 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES -- The seventh-seeded UCLA women's tennis team defeated No. 10 Washington 4-0 Friday at Los Angeles Tennis Center, earning a trip to Orlando, Fla. for the remainder of NCAA Championships.
Next up for the Bruins is a quarterfinal-round date with the winner of Saturday's 11 a.m. (PT) duel between No. 15 Oklahoma State and host No. 2 North Carolina. All round-of-eight matches will be played Friday, May 17 at the USTA National Campus at times to be determined.
Abi Altick clinched the win Friday for UCLA (21-7), increasing her team-leading total of deciding victories to six. The sophomore notched the third straight-set triumph of singles play, following Gabby Andrews and Jada Hart. The Bruins also picked up two doubles wins without a loss to get on the board. With the loss, Washington's end-of-season record is 21-5.
The Court 3 doubles pair of Abi Altick and Taylor Johnson, ranked 82nd in the nation, picked up its eighth straight win and 12th out of 13 overall to get the Bruins started. The duo took the first four games from Natsuho Arakawa-Kenadi Hance and never looked back en route to a 6-2 win.
With Court 1's all-ranked pair battle knotted at three games apiece, UCLA's Court 2 pair or 11th-ranked Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart took care of business against Zoey Weil and Vanessa Wong. The 6-3 result marked 13 wins in 14 results for Bolton-Hart and a team-high 29 total victories.
Leading 1-0, UCLA went on to capture five of six first sets in singles play. Perhaps most impressive was the performance by No. 32 Bolton, who rebounded from a 2-5 deficit against No. 92 Wong to win 9-7 in a tiebreaker. The Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year also led 5-3 in her second set when the match was completed.
Gabby Andrews continued her singles success on Court 6, where the senior defeated Nika Zupancic 6-1, 6-4. The win represented Andrews' seventh in as many decisions and increased the UCLA lead to 2-0. She has been the first to finish in singles play in back-to-back matches.
Next off was No. 45 Jada Hart, who avenged a Pac-12 Championships loss to No. 57 Stacey Fung on the top court. Hart jumped out to a 4-1 first-set lead and bounced back from an early second-set deficit for a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
With Bolton nearing a win of her own, No. 120 Altick sealed the deal on Court 5. After a rather convincing 6-2 result against Sedona Gallagher in the first set, Altick needed to come back in the second. Trailing 4-5, the Monroe, La. native took the final three games, including two breaks of serve. The final point was taken with a backhand shot up the line and out of the reach of Gallagher.
