SAN FRANCISCO โ UCLA women's tennis sophomore Abi Altick was selected to the Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team in her first year eligible, the conference announced Tuesday. Seniors Ayan Broomfield and Alaina Miller were also recognized for their first times, as each garnered Honorable-Mention acclaim.
In order to be eligible, student-athletes must maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) while participating in at least half of their team's regular-season events. They also must have at least one year in residence at their institution.
A sociology major, Altick presented a 3.77 GPA at the time of her inclusion. On the court, the sophomore is second on the team with 19 singles victories. She is 11-4 in dual matches, including a 5-1 mark on Court 5. In doubles play, Altick checks in with a 25-6 record and is ranked among the nation's top 100 tandems with both Alaina Miller and Taylor Johnson. On April 23, the Monroe, La. native earned her first Pac-12 Player of the Week honor after clinching a 4-2 road win at USC that gave the Bruins the No. 2 seed at the Pac-12 Championships.
It has been a season of firsts for Broomfield in her final season of collegiate tennis, as the Clemson transfer added the All-Academic nod to her initial All-Pac-12 Honorable-Mention selection. She also picked up an ITA All-America selection for the first time in her career, teaming with Gabby Andrews to earn the No. 4 seed in the upcoming NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships in Orlando, Fla. Andrews-Broomfield is 21-7, including a 7-3 record against nationally-ranked opponents. She is also 18-10 in singles play.
A six-time member of UCLA's Athletic Director's Honor Roll, Miller earned her first academic award from the conference. She is 15-14 in singles play and 15-8 in doubles matches. The senior turned in a standout performance on March 8 at Arizona State, when she defeated Savannah Slaysman in three sets to clinch a 4-2 defeat of the Sun Devils.
