Women's Tennis Blanks NAU for Second-Round Spot
May 04, 2019 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – The seventh-seeded UCLA women's tennis team shined in its NCAA Championships debut at Los Angeles Tennis Center Saturday, rolling past Northern Arizona by a 4-0 score into Sunday's second round.
The Bruins will meet LSU in Sunday's match at LATC, with first serve scheduled for 1 p.m., PT. The Tigers improved to 17-11 with a 4-2 defeat of San Diego in Saturday's first match.
Ayan Broomfield clinched the sweep of the Lumberjacks with UCLA's third straight-set singles win of the day. Alaina Miller and Jada Hart also turned in singles wins for the Bruins (19-7). Northern Arizona (15-9) forced a third decision in doubles play, but was ultimately bested on the top court.
Doubles play looked destined for a three-match affair early, as Courts 2 and 3 went decidedly different directions. UCLA got off on the right foot with a dominant performance on Court 3, where 82nd-ranked Abi Altick and Taylor Johnson won its sixth-straight match and 10th in 11 tries this season. The pair recorded a 6-0 win against Emilie Haakansson and Madi Moore.
Eleventh-ranked Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart had its 11-match winning streak snapped on Court 2, where Lumberjacks Hanneke Lodewijks and Elllie Millard took six of seven games to pull NAU even with just Court 1 left to finish.
UCLA's fifth-ranked tandem of Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield took four of five games from Adrianna Sosnowska and Chiara Tomasetti to put itself squarely on the road to victory. The Lumberjacks answered with four of the next five, however, to pull even. A big hold of serve by Andrews-Broomfield set the tone for the deciding break and first point of the day.
UCLA swept the first sets in singles play, with Gabby Andrews rounding out the group thanks to a 7-5 decision on Court 6.
Alaina Miller started her NCAA tournament strong on Court 4, where she defeated Sosnowska in straight sets to give UCLA a 2-0 lead. Following a nip-and-tuck first set, the senior blitzed her Lumberjack counterpart in the second for a 6-4, 6-1 triumph.

No. 45 Hart trailed 1-3 against Tomasetti on the top court before running off 11 straight games and putting the Bruins one win away from the second round. Hart turned in a break to secure the final game, as Tomasetti's backhand hit the net.
Eight days removed from her clinching win against Washington in the Pac-12 Championships semifinal round, Broomfield turned in another on the NCAA stage. The senior was never threatened and completed her 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Ellie Millard with a backhanded drop shot on Court 3.
