Baseball Sends 21 Players to Summer Collegiate Leagues

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA baseball program is set to have 21ย players participate in various summer baseball leagues around the country this summer, including the Cape Code League, Northwoodsย League, West Coast League, and US Collegiate National Team.
Sophomore outfielder Garrett Mitchell headlines the Bruins' summer assignees, as he's been invited to play on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team (USCNT) this summer. He is set to become the 18th UCLA player to don the red, white, and blue, following in the footsteps of established MLB stars such as Gerrit Cole, Trevor Bauer, Adam Plutko, Brandon Crawford, and Troy Glaus. He's UCLA's first position player on the USCNT since Steve Rodriguez in 2010.
In addition, UCLA sophomore right-hander and 2019 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Holden Powell will take part in a tryout for the USCNT in late June.
The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team will participate in series of four intrasquad exhibition games and a game against the Coastal Plain League Select before announcing a 26-man roster prior to the 8th USA vs. Cuba International Friendship Series that will take place July 2-6 in Cary, Charlotte, Durham and Hickory, North Carolina.
The prestigious Cape Cod League will host six Bruins this summer. Sophomore infielder Kevin Kendall and freshman right-handed pitchers Nick Nastrini and Sean Mullen will all be teammates with Falmouth, while freshman infielder Matt McLain will play for the defending Cape Cod Champion Wareham Gatemen and freshman catcher Noah Cardenas will suit up for Yarmouth-Dennis. Powell is set to join the Cotuit Kettleers until heading to Cary, N.C. for his USA Baseball tryout. Mitchell was slated to play for the Orleans Firebirds in the Cape before receiving his USCNT invite.
Eight Bruins are headed to the Northwoods League this summer, which is based in the Great Lakes region. There will be three sets of UCLA teammates in the Northwoods, as freshman infielders Jake Moberg and Mikey Perez will both play for the Mankato MoonDogs, freshman right-handed pitcher/infielder Jack Filby and redshirt freshman infielder JT Schwartz will team up for the La Crosse Loggers, and freshman lefty Daniel Colwell and sophomore catcher RJ Teijeiro will suit up with the Waterloo Bucks. Rounding out the Northwoods placements is freshman righty Dennis Boatman (Duluth).
Sophomore right-hander Michael Townsend will head east to play for the Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League this summer. Powell pitched for the Gulls in 2018.
The West Coast league, headquartered in the Pacific Northwest, will serve as the home to six incoming Bruins this summer. Left-handed pitcher Jake Saum will play for Wenatchee, infielder Michael Curialle will head to Corvallis, first-baseman/left-handed pitcher Josh Hahn will suit up for Yakima Valley, catcher Darius Perry will play for Portland, and right-handed pitcher Charles Harrison and outfielder Emanuel Dean are both slated to play for Walla Walla.
