UCLA Softball and UCLA Gymnastics will be well-represented at the 2019 ESPYS, earning two nominations each. The ESPYS will take place on July 10 at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and air on ABC at 8pm/7pm CT.
Two-time National Player of the Year Rachel Garcia is one of four nominees for Best College Athlete. Garcia was the Most Outstanding Player of the Women's College World Series and the first ever to be named both Pac-12 Player and Pitcher of the Year in the same season. She went 5-0 in the circle at the WCWS, posting a 1.75 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 36 innings while also batting .333 with two home runs and eight RBI. Most memorably, she went 10 innings and struck out 16 against Washington in the national semifinals and then ended the game with a walk-off, three-run home run to put the Bruins in the Championship Series. Gymnast Katelyn Ohashi took the internet by storm in January with her perfect 10 floor exercise routine that now has well over 125 million views. Ohashi's perfect joyful performance is a nominee for the Best Viral Sports Moment. Ohashi continued to make waves throughout the 2019 season. She went on to score five more perfect 10s, including one to win the Pac-12 title for the second-straight year, and scored another viral video with her final performance at the NCAA Championships. Two UCLA plays are up for the Best Play of the Year. Ohashi's floor routine is the No. 5 seed in the ESPYs bracket, while the walk-off single by UCLA Softball's Kinsley Washington in the Women's College World Series is the No. 10 seed. (Vote for Best Play)
