UCLA Women's Soccer Announces 2019 Schedule
June 26, 2019 | Women's Soccer
UCLA will officially kick off its 27th season on Aug. 23 with the 2019 season opener against Iowa State at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. The Bruins will host a 10-game home schedule, capping the regular season with the crosstown showdown against USC on Nov. 8.
The Bruins will face an early test on Aug. 29 and Sept. 1 when Florida State and Florida visit Los Angeles. UCLA and Florida State will have a rematch of the 2013 NCAA Championship on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 5:30pm at Banc of California Stadium, followed by a UCLA-Florida matchup on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 5pm.
"That will be a great weekend for soccer in Southern California," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "To have a tournament atmosphere early in the season is going to be a big positive for our team down the road."
Other non-conference games include road matches against Long Beach State Aug. 25 and Santa Clara Sept. 5, a home match against Wisconsin on Sept. 14 and a road trip to Hawaii to take on Pepperdine and Hawaii on September 19 and 22, respectively.
Pac-12 Conference play begins Sept. 27 at home against California. The Bruins will also host Colorado (Oct. 10), Utah (Oct. 13), Washington (Oct. 24), Washington State (Oct. 27) and USC (Nov. 8).
"We always look forward to playing USC, not just because of the crosstown rivalry and the competitive nature of the game, but because Southern California comes out in full force for this game year after year," said Cromwell. "We fully expect the atmosphere to be electric."
UCLA will have 12 of its games televised on the Pac-12 Networks, beginning with the season opener against Iowa State on Aug. 23 at 7pm.
The Bruins return 10 starters from last season's squad, including 2019 Women's World Cup players Jessie Fleming and Teagan Micah, 2018 first-team All-American Ashley Sanchez, and 2018 All-Pac-12 honorees Viviana Villacorta, Anika Rodriguez, Karina Rodriguez and Delanie Sheehan. Also back is the team's No. 2 returning scorer Olivia Athens, plus 2017 All-Region performer Kaiya McCullough. UCLA posted a 17-3-2 record in 2018, finishing the year on a 13-game unbeaten streak and leading the nation in goals scored with 61. Newcomers to the team include LSU transfer and All-American defender Lucy Parker, U-17 World Cup players Mia Fishel and Sunshine Fontes, Australian National Team player Rachel Lowe and Nicaraguan National Team player Jackie Gilday.
