Budgett, Edwards Secure CRCA All-America Honors

June 29, 2019 | Women's Rowing

Seniors Saskia Budgett and Kyra Edwards have earned CRCA second-team All-America acclaim, as announced Thursday by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) last Thursday.

In addition, senior Carlisle Wheeler was named an honorable mention All-America selection.

Budgett and Edwards have become the Bruins' first All-America selections since Marie Jacquet secured second-team All-America honors as a senior in 2017. Budgett had been honored as a junior (2018) as a CRCA All-Pac-12 selection.

The CRCA also unveiled its National Scholar-Athlete awards this week. Seniors Lucy Jepson, Haley Tong and Lanea Tuiasosopo were honored as CRCA National Scholar-Athlete selections. Student-athletes can secure CRCA National Scholar-Athlete awards by having compiled a cumulative grade point average above 3.5 and by having competed in at least 75 percent of the team's varsity races. First-year students are not eligible.

All three scholar-athlete selections for UCLA – Jepson, Tong and Tuiasosopo – were honored with that award for the second consecutive year. Tuiasosopo was a scholar-athlete selection for the third straight season.

Budgett, who grew up in Great Britain and lived in Switzerland prior to attending UCLA, rowed in the Bruins' top varsity eight crew throughout her four seasons in college. She was named an All-Pac-12 selection as a junior and senior.

Edwards, who hails from Nottingham, England, was a key contributor in UCLA's varsity eight crew throughout her four collegiate seasons. Both Budgett and Edwards played prominent roles in helping Great Britain secure bronze medals last summer at the U-23 World Championships in Poland.

Wheeler, who arrived at UCLA after having attended Nauset Regional High School (Massachusetts), secured honorable mention All-America accolades for the first time in her career. Wheeler helped the United States win a gold medal last summer at the U-23 World Championships in Poland. During her four-year collegiate career, Wheeler was a regular contributor in the Bruins' top two varsity eight crews. She rowed primarily in the Bruins V8+ as a sophomore, junior and senior.

Tuiasosopo was honored as one of UCLA's two Scholar-Athlete of the Year selections in May at the department's year-end scholar-athlete banquet. The two student-athletes (one male, one female) with the highest cumulative grade point averages are honored each season as UCLA's Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
