UCLA Defeats LMU, 6-3, to Advance to Super Regionals
June 03, 2019 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 1-seeded UCLA baseball team outlasted No. 3-seed Loyola Marymount, 6-3, before a standing-room only crowd in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional Final at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Monday night.ย
The Bruins' victory propelled UCLA into the NCAA Super Regional round for the first time since 2013. UCLA will take on Michigan at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles in a best-of-three series beginning Friday, June 7. Games on Friday and Saturday are slated to begin at 6 p.m. (PT). If necessary, Game 3 will take place Sunday at 6 p.m. (PT).ย
Chase Strumpf delivered a decisive blow with two outs in the fourth inning, cranking a three-run home run to left field to push UCLA ahead, 6-2. He finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs, three RBI and one walk.
ย
Six UCLA pitchers combined to limit Loyola Marymount (34-25) to three runs and six hits. Right-hander Michael Townsend (3-0) picked up the victory, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of starting pitcher Felix Rubi.
ย
"Our team, it has been resilient all season," UCLA head coach John Savage said. "It has been a good team, clearly. Week in and week out, been a very consistent team. We're very happy to come back out of the losers' bracket โ not an easy thing to do these days โ and win two games yesterday and one game today. I'm very proud of our guys, proud of our entire program."
ย
Loyola Marymount right-hander CJ Fernandezees (4-2) was charged with the loss, allowing three runs and five hits through three innings.
ย
With Monday night's win, UCLA (51-9) tied the program's single-season record for victories (51). The Bruins' 2010 team posted a 51-17 record, advancing to the championship round of the College World Series.
ย
LMU opened Monday night's Regional Final with a two-run first inning, taking advantage of a pair of UCLA fielding errors. The Bruins responded in the bottom of the first, scoring a pair of runs to tie the game, 2-2.
ย
UCLA snapped the 2-2 deadlock in the third inning. Ryan Kriedler, who went 3-for-5 with three of UCLA's six runs, opened the frame with a hit to the gap in left-center field, racing toward second base safely to secure the double. An infield single by Jake Pries sent Kriedler to third base, before Michael Toglia broke the tie with a sacrifice fly to left-center field.
ย
UCLA's three runs in the fourth inning were all manufactured with two outs. Jeremy Ydens reached on a two-out double and Kriedler was hit by a pitch before Strumpf connected on his three-run home run to left field. The three-run blast came on the 10th pitch of the game from Codie Paiva, LMU's ace right-hander who entered the game in relief at the start of the inning.
ย
Right-hander Nate Hadley needed just 13 pitches to get through a scoreless sixth inning, before right-hander Ryan Garcia limited LMU to one hit through the seventh and eighth innings.
ย
Right-hander Holden Powell struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 ninth inning, notching his 17th save of the season.
ย
POSTSEASON NOTES: Since the NCAA adopted the current postseason format in 1999 (featuring the Regional round and the Super Regional round), UCLA has now advanced to six Super Regionals (2000, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2019). The winner of this weekend's best-of-three Super Regional between Michigan and UCLA will secure a trip to the eight-team College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.
ย
UCLA last advanced to the Super Regional round in 2013, sweeping the Los Angeles Regional at Jackie Robinson Stadium before winning consecutive games at Cal State Fullerton. The Bruins' 2013 team posted a perfect 5-0 record in Omaha to secure UCLA's first-ever NCAA baseball championship.
