LOS ANGELES โ UCLA throwers Alyssa Wilson and Justin Stafford, along with volunteer assistant Kendall Gustafson and long jump standout Kylie Price, will compete at the 2019 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships, which are set for July 25-28 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
ย
A sophomore out of Jackson, N.J., Wilson will take the stage in the hammer, shot put and discus. For the second straight season, she was the only athlete in the NCAA to qualify for three events at the national meet. Wilson didn't disappoint, notching top-eight finishes in all three, including a third-place finish in the hammer with a mark of 69.75m (228-10). She became the first Bruin to earn top-eight finishes in three separate events since 2004, when Sheena Johnson achieved it in four events (100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay). The Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Year, Wilson scored 26 points at the conference championships, the highest point tally of any athlete, male or female, to collect Pac-12 Women's Athlete of the Meet honors. She won a Pac-12 title in the discus with a mark of 56.93m (186-9) and also collected second-place finishes in the shot put (17.00m; 55-9.25) and hammer (67.78m; 222-4).
ย
Stafford will compete in the hammer throw unattached. The 2019 recipient of UCLA's Bruin Leadership Award, Stafford posted five points for the Bruins at the Pac-12 Championships, placing fourth in the hammer at 66.17m (217-1). He went on to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, earning Second Team All-America honors with a 15th-place finish thanks to an effort of 67.05m (220-0).
ย
Gustafson will also be competing in Iowa. She will battle in the heptathlon unattached. In her first year as a professional, Gustafson placed second in the heptathlon with a personal-best 6,078 at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University. While competing at UCLA, Gustafson recorded UCLA's best heptathlon finish (fourth; 5,800 points) at the NCAAs since 2001 (Michelle Perry, second) and the Bruins' highest NCAA heptathlon score since Jackie Joyner-Kersee notched a 6,390 at the 1983 Championships.
Price competed for UCLA from 2012-16 and will take the stage in the long jump, boasting a lifetime best mark of 6.70m (21-11.75), which she earned at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2016. During her senior season in Westwood, Price was a Second Team All-American in the 4x100m relay and collected Honorable Mention honors in the long jump, placing 18th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She owns the fifth-best outdoor long jump in program history at 6.52m (21-4.75), achieved in 2013.ย
