August 01, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Three members of the UCLA women's soccer team have been named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List for 2019 โ senior Jessie Fleming and juniors Ashley Sanchez and Lucy Parker.
The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This year's winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 10, 2020 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
Fleming, a midfielder from London, Ontario, Canada, was a finalist in 2017 and makes the Watch List for the third time in her career. The Canadian National Team veteran played in her second Women's World Cup this summer. Although she missed nearly half of the 2018 season while on national team duty, Fleming still earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors for the third year in a row and was a second-team All-West Region honoree after scoring 15 points on five goals and five assists. In 2017, she earned first-team All-America honors, recording six goals with eight assists. As a freshman, she led the Bruins in goals (11) and points (27) and became just the fourth rookie in UCLA history to earn All-America acclaim. She was also selected the Top Drawer Soccer National Freshman of the Year.
Sanchez, a forward from Monrovia, Calif., has been setting UCLA records since she arrived in 2017. She set a new UCLA freshman record with 12 assists in 2017 and then set four new school records in 2018 - single-game assists (four), consecutive games with a goal or assist (13 and counting), assists in a NCAA Tournament (seven) and career NCAA Tournament assists (11). She also tied the school record for single-season assists with 15 in 2018. After just two seasons, she ranks sixth on UCLA's career assist chart with 27, to go along with 16 career goals. Sanchez earned first-team All-America honors in 2018 and was a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. She is a two-time first-team All-Pac-12 and All-West Region honoree.
Parker, a defender from Cambridge, England, comes to UCLA from LSU, where she earned third-team All-America and first-team All-SEC and All-Southeast Region honors in 2018. As a center back last season, she contributed to 10 shutouts, second-most in school history, while scoring three goals, two of which were game-winners. She helped lead LSU to the SEC Tournament title and to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Parker has been a mainstay with England's Youth National Teams and helped the U-19 squad win the 2016 Women's International Cup.
The MAC Hermann Trophy Watch Lists are compiled by members of the United Soccer Coaches Men's and Women's NCAA Division I All-America Committees. Fifteen semifinalists will be named for both the men's and women's MAC Hermann Trophy on Dec. 3 based on voting by NCAA Division I coaches. From those candidates, three finalists will be announced on Dec. 13 and placed on the ballot for the coveted award.
