OKLAHOMA CITY - Five past and current Bruins were invited to participate at the 2020 USA Softball Women's National Team Olympic Selection Trials, as announced by USA Softball on Friday. Rising seniors Rachel Garcia and Bubba Nickles, rising sophomore Megan Faraimo and UCLA alums Ally Carda and Delaney Spaulding will be at the Trials, which will be held Oct. 1-6 in Oklahoma City.
UCLA is one of two colleges with five selections, along with Florida.
A total of 30 athletes were invited and they will compete for 15 spots and three replacement roles on the 2020 U.S. Women's Olympic Team. The team will compete in a coast-to-coast tour prior to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (July 22-28).
During the selection process, athletes will participate in position drills as well as simulated games and be evaluated by the USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Committee. The roster for the 2020 USA Softball Women's National Team will be announced at the conclusion of the Selection Trials and a press conference featuring the 2020 roster will be held on the morning of Oct. 8.
Carda is in her fifth consecutive season with USA Softball, Garcia is in her second in a row and Spaulding is in her fourth straight. All three won gold at July's USA Softball International Cup. Garcia and Spaulding are on the roster for the Pan American Games, which gets underway this weekend, while Carda is an alternate. Faraimo is on the U-19 Women's National Team, which won bronze at the International Cup and will be playing at the WBSC U-19 Women's Softball Cup starting Aug. 11. Nickles played with the U.S. Junior WNT in 2015 and 2017 and with the Elite Team in 2016 and 2018.
