Two Bruins, offensive lineman Sean Rhyan and punt returner Kyle Philips, were named to the 2019 Football Writers Association of America (FWAA)-Shaun Alexander Freshman All-America Team presented by Stand Together. UCLA, Alabama, Oregon and Purdue were tied for the most selections from one school. All 10 FBS conferences and two independents are represented on the team.
 
Rhyan started all 12 games for the Bruins at left tackle. He became the first true freshman to start a season-opener at tackle since Simon Goines did so against Rice in 2012. Rhyan helped to pave the way for running back Joshua Kelley, who ranked second in the Pac-12 in rushing last year, to become the eighth running back in UCLA history to record a second straight 1,000-yard season. The Bruins put together a streak of five straight 200-yard rushing games in 2019 for the first time since the 1978 season.  
 
Philips, a redshirt freshman, saw action in all 12 games, with eight starts at wide receiver in 2019. He helped UCLA rate second in the nation in punt return average for 2019 with his 22.5 yards per return mark. Philips had three returns of at least 30 yards during the season, included a 69-yard return for touchdown at Washington State. His 60 receptions were the most ever by a freshman player at UCLA and he became the first redshirt freshman to lead the team in catches since 2001 (Craig Bragg). Philip's total of 12 receptions at USC was tied for the fourth-most in school single-game history. He also had a 10-catch effort at Stanford, which places him behind only J.J. Stokes and Jordan Lasley on the school list for most double-digit reception games in a career.

The FWAA Freshman All-America Team was chosen by a 13-person panel of nationally-prominent college football experts representing each of the FBS conferences along with independents. Both true freshmen (20 players) and redshirt freshmen (12 players) were considered for the team and are so noted on the list below.
