LOS ANGELES – The UCLA track and field team is headed to New York City to compete in the Dr. Sander Invitational/Columbia Challenge at the Armory Track and Field Center. The competition kicks off on Thursday with the pentathlon and heptathlon; the rest of the meet program will run through Friday and Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bruins bagged some impressive showings at the UW Indoor Preview last weekend (Saturday, Jan. 18), coming away with five field victories and a pair of wins on the track. Alyssa Wilson swept the women's throws with victories in the weight throw (20.73m, 68-00.25) and shot put (57-02.75), while Nate Esparza secured the collegiate victory in the men's shot (19.22m, 63-00.75). Sean Lee posted season-opening clearance of 2.16m (7-01.00) for the win in the high jump. Shae Anderson took the win in the women's 600m in her UCLA debut, clocking a time of 1:30.57. Anderson went on to join Makenzy Pierre-Webster, Meleni Rodney, and Chinyere Okoro in the 4x400m relay, with the team crossing at 3:42.50 for the win.
THURSDAY, JAN. 23
UCLA's first action at the Armory features Isa Videler in the pentathlon competition. This will be the first indoor pentathlon for Videler as a Bruin, though the junior did finish ninth at the 2019 Pac-12 Championships in the outdoor heptathlon. The 60m hurdles is the first event for the pentathlon on Thursday with the gun slated for 5:30 p.m. ET / 2:30 p.m. PT.
FRIDAY, JAN. 24
Friday's competition for the Bruins opens with the women's shot put (12:30 p.m. ET/9:30 a.m. PT). Wilson is in action for the UCLA women in the shot, as the junior looks for her second-straight victory in the event. Senior Harrison Schrage is coming off a collegiate victory in the long jump last weekend (7.22m, 23-08.25) and leads the Bruin men in the event on Friday. Five Bruin freshmen – Mia Cervantes, Isabella Grant, Eden Henderson, Samantha Serex, and Camryn Thomson – all see action Friday morning in the pole vault. Thompson led the squad with a ninth-place finish at the UW Indoor Preview, clearing 3.81m (12-06.00).
The Bruins' first track event of the day is the women's 60m dash (1:30 p.m. ET/10:30a.m. PT), in which Anderson and freshman Alexandra Chan are set to toe the line for UCLA in the preliminary heats. The men's 60m prelims will follow, as sophomore Kenroy Higgins II looks to build on his 6.64 time and second-place finish from last weekend. The women's and men's 60m finals are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. PT and 12:40 p.m. PT, respectively.
SATURDAY, JAN. 25
The final day of the meet program will kick off with the women's weight throw and women's 3,000m competitions at 10:00 a.m. ET/7:00 a.m. PT. The Bruins will have four representatives in the women's 3k, including junior Paige Carter, who broke the five-minute barrier (4:59.30) in the mile last weekend. Senior Carter Blunt makes his season debut in the men's 3k and enters with an indoor-best of 8:08.43 in the event. Saturday's competition will also feature Riley Kelly, Jett Charvet, and Mason Ratkovich in the men's 800m. Kelly (1:19.89) and Charvet (1:21.43) went 2-6 in the 600m in Washington last week, while Ratkovich helped the men's 4x400m relay squad to a second-place finish (3:14.66).
Sophomore Kyrah Johnson joins Anderson in the women's 400m Saturday. Johnson is coming off a season-opening time of 57.48 in the event last weekend, good for a 13th-place finish. Saturday will also mark the UCLA debut for freshman sprinter Catherine Leger, who is entered in the 200m race one of the Bruins' 4x400m relay squads. The Candadian enters her UCLA career with indoor personal bests of 7.60 (60m), 24.05 (200m), and 55.50 (400m).
