LOS ANGELES – Junior forward Michaela Onyenwere earned Pac-12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors, the Conference office announced Monday.
Onyenwere put up a pair of impressive performances in UCLA's road sweep of then-No. 6/5 Stanford (Feb. 7) and California (Feb. 9), helping lead the Bruins to their first Bay Area road sweep since 1999.
In the Bruins' 79-69 victory over the Cardinal, Onyenwere put up a game-high 29 points on 10-for-19 shooting, including a career-high tying three 3-pointers. The Aurora, Colo., native also grabbed 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the year. Onyenwere was also strong defensively against Stanford, recording two steals and two blocks in the performance.
Onyenwere notched 21 points in the team's overtime victory against Cal, including 16 points across the second half and overtime. Her final basket of the game proved to be a decisive one, as she knocked down a turnaround jumper with 25.7 seconds left in OT to put the Bruins up two. Cal could not convert at the other end and UCLA iced the game away at the line, securing the 74-70 victory. The 21 points were good for her 11th 20+ point performance of the year.
This is Onyenwere's second Pac-12 weekly honor of the year and UCLA's 61st all-time Conference weekly nod. Onyenwere last secured the honor in the week of Dec. 23, 2019 after putting up 22.0 points and 10.0 rebounds over UCLA's road victories against Georgia (Dec. 19) and then-No. 12/14 Indiana.
The No. 7 Bruins (21-2, 10-2) are back in action at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom to take on No. 3 Oregon on Friday, Feb. 14 at 8:00 p.m. PT. The game is UCLA's annual Play4Kay Pink Game for breast cancer awareness, honoring late NCAA women's basketball coach Kay Yow.
