Tempe, Ariz. – No. 8/9 UCLA picked up a road victory to cap its weekend in Arizona, taking down No. 19/20 Arizona State at Desert Financial Arena. UCLA improved to 19-2 (8-2) on the year while ASU fell to 16-6 (6-4). The Bruins outscored the Sun Devils 20-8 in the third quarter and went 15-for-16 from the free throw line to control the game in the second half and take the victory.
The Bruins were led by senior guard Japreece Dean, who registered her 13th double-digit scoring performance with a game-high 18 points. Freshman guard Charisma Osborne also notched an impressive game with 15 points, including 10 in UCLA's dominant third quarter.
Arizona State benefited from a pair of double-digit scorers in Robbi Ryan and Reili Richardson, who put up 15 and 12 points, respectively.
The Bruins got on the board early with buckets from Michaela Onyenwere, Osborne, and Natalie Chou, as UCLA jumped out to an early 7-2 lead (7:38) and forced a full lineup substitution from the Sun Devils. ASU responded with a quick 8-2 run aided by some strong work on the offensive glass. With the Bruins down three after the first media stoppage, Osborne saved a loose ball and the UCLA swung the ball around to Dean in the corner, who drained the three-ball to tie the game (4:02). Later in the frame, Dean knocked down a spot-up long ball to give the Bruins a three-point lead (3:04). The Sun Devils responded with a quick 8-0 spurt to end the quarter with a 20-15 lead. Dean's eight points led the Bruins in the opening frame.
ASU knocked down a pair of jumpers to open the quarter before Chantel Horvat found Lauryn Miller in the paint for an and-one lay-in to cut the score to 24-18 (7:26). Later, Natalie Chou and Horvat each put in lay-ups to cut the lead to four and force an ASU timeout at the 4:33 mark in the half. Freshman Jaden Owens then sliced into the paint for the converted and-one to put the Bruins down two (3:28). After the teams exchanged buckets for several minutes, Dean drew a foul on a jump shot with 2.8 seconds left in the half and knocked down the pair to solidify a two-point deficit (34-32) heading into the break. Dean's 12 points led all scores at the half. Miller added five points and three boards.
UCLA opened the half with two-straight buckets from Onyenwere and Miller to take a two-point lead, but ASU answered with a quick 4-0 run of their own (38-36). After an exchange of baskets, Osborne took a strong baseline drive into the lane for a lay-in to give the Bruins a 41-40 lead (5:27). Osborne continued her stellar quarter with her third three-pointer of the afternoon to extend the lead to eight at the 2:48 mark.
