No. 8 UCLA Heads to Texas For Frisco College Classic
The No. 8-ranked UCLA baseball team will play its first games away from home this week, traveling to the Dallas area for the Frisco College Classic. The tournament, played at Dr. Pepper Ballpark - the home of the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders - also features Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and Illinois. The Bruins open the weekend with a 1:00 p.m. PT matchup with Oklahoma State on Friday, followed by a 4:00 p.m. PT game against Texas A&M on Saturday and a 9:00 a.m. PT game against Illinois on Sunday. Hot Start To 2020
UCLA has had an impressive start to the 2020 season, sweeping weekend series against UC Riverside and St. Mary's while defeating Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in midweeks. UCLA is outscoring its opponents 53-7 (plus-46) so far on the year and has an anemic 0.75 team ERA. This is the team's best start to a season since 2010, when the squad won a program-record 22 straight games to open the year.
Pettway Named Pac-12 Pitcher, Collegiate baseball National Player of the Week
UCLA junior righty Zach Pettway picked up a pair of honors after striking out a career-high 13 batters in 6 2/3 innings against St. Mary's last Friday, as he was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week as well as one of the National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball. It was the second weekly league honor in Pettway's career. The Long Beach, Calif. native was dominant against the Gaels, allowing just three hits, all coming with two outs. He struck out at least one batter in every inning he entered, and struck out the side in three consecutive innings (2nd-4th).

Over the first eight games of the year, UCLA has scored 12 runs including a five-spot against Loyola Marymount last Tuesday, and has had at least one baserunner in all but one game. The Bruins own a 4-1 record all-time against Oklahoma State, including a 3-1 mark in the postseason. - Zach Pettway struck out a career-high 13 as UCLA blanked St. Mary's 5-0 Friday night in the series opener. Pettway had at least one K in each frame he pitched, and struck out the side in three consecutive innings at one point (2-4).
- A Pat Caulfield two-run homer and a two-run single off the wall by Will McInerny were the biggest offensive blows in a 7-1 Saturday win over UCR. Adrian Chaidez earned the win for UCLA with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. UCLA's bullpen threw 5.2 scoreless frames to help lock down the win.
- The Bruins edged out St. Mary's 2-0 on Sunday to complete the sweep. Jesse Bergin pitched the first 5.1 innings before seeing the late inning combo of Michael Townsend-Kyle Mora-Holden Powell lock it down from there. UCLA strung together five consecutive hits in the third inning to produce the offense necessary to win the game.
- UCLA defeated Keio University (Japan) on Tuesday by a score of 15-1 in an international exhibition. Jarron Silva was the star of the game for the Bruins - who scored nine runs in the first - recording three extra-base hits and five RBIs.
- The Bruins wrapped up their season-opening homestand with an 8-2 triumph over Pepperdine on Wednesday in a battle of then-unbeaten teams. Jared Karros set the tone for UCLA with five innings of shutout ball, retiring the side in order in all but one of his frames. Silva put UCLA up early with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, and then UCLA pulled away with a four-run seventh in a rally that featured five consecutive Bruin batters reaching base.
