LOS ANGELES – Michaela Onyenwere was named an Associated Press Third-Team All-American, the AP announced today. It is her first-career All-America accolade.
Onyenwere becomes the third Bruin to be named to one of the first three teams on the AP All-America roster. Jordin Canada (2018) and Maylana Martin (1999) each earned Third Team honors while nine Bruins have combined to receive 13 all-time AP All-America Honorable mention accolades.
Onyenwere posted an impressive 2019-20 campaign, as the junior was the Pac-12's second-leading scorer with 18.9 points per game. She notched 13 games with at least 20 points, including a career-high 31 points in UCLA's home victory over Washington on Jan. 24. The Aurora, Colo., native also grabbed 8.5 rebounds per contest, the fourth-best mark in the Conference. She notched 10 double-doubles on the year and snagged a career-best 17 boards at Washington (Feb. 23). Onyenwere averaged 3.0 offensive rebounds per game to lead UCLA to the nation's third-highest offensive rebounding total (16.7).
The All-America distinction for Onywenere comes on the heels of additional postseason recognition. She was recently named to the Pac-12 All-Conference team for the second-straight year and earned a spot on the Pac-12 All-Tournament team, averaging 20 points and 10.5 rebounds across UCLA's tournament games. Onyenwere is also on watch lists for the John R. Wooden Award and Wade Trophy for national player of the year honors.
Additionally, Onyenwere was recently named a top-5 finalist for the Cheryl Miller Award, presented by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. The award is presented annually to the nation's best small forward. Fans can vote on the Cheryl Miller Award and additional positional awards once a day at hoophallawards.com/women/vote.php.
