LOS ANGELES - Freshman Lexi Sosa tossed UCLA's third shutout in a row, striking out seven, while junior Kinsley Washington drove in four, including a three-run homer, as the top-ranked Bruins defeated St. John's, 9-0 in five innings, on Tuesday at Easton Stadium.
Sosa (3-0) had a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth and two strikeouts in both the third and fifth, scattering two hits and two walks in her five innings. The Bruins (20-1) had seven hits from six different players.
UCLA sent 11 to the plate in the bottom of the first, scoring eight times. Washington led off with a single up the middle and scored on a double to left-center by junior Briana Perez. One out later, Perez stole third and came home on a double to right by freshman Maya Brady to make it 2-0. Following a walk to junior Delanie Wisz, freshman Alyssa Garcia tapped a ball to second that went for an error, as Brady scored the Bruins' third run.
A hard-hit single through the right side by junior Julie Rodriguez plated Wisz to make it 4-0. Then after a walk to freshman Seneca Curo, sophomore Kelli Godin grounded one to second for an RBI, scoring Garcia with the Bruins' fifth run. Back at the top of the lineup, Washington launched her second homer of the season to right-center to make it 8-0.
The Bruins added one more in the third, as a Rodriguez walk, a Curo single, a Sosa free pass and a Washington walk scored senior Jacqui Prober, who was running for Rodriguez.
