The following letter was sent by UCLA head coach Mick Cronin to men's basketball ticket-holders during the week of March 30, 2020.
Dear Bruin fans,
The last several weeks have been an incredibly unusual time for our community and this country, as we maneuver the challenges of fighting the coronavirus pandemic. I told our players after our season abruptly ended that their safety and well-being is extremely important. In the days and weeks ahead, I hope that you and your loved ones are staying healthy and safe.
The main reason I'm writing to you, however, is simply to say thank you! The last year has been very memorable. When our coaching staff got started last spring, we had to work quickly and efficiently. From building a staff to managing our roster, and recruiting for the future, we had to establish the foundation of this program.
Certainly, our team had its ups and downs last season. But the true test of a person – and in our case, a team – is how you respond through difficult moments and adverse situations. I told our guys that in December and January, when it felt like the losses were just snowballing. We found some confidence and toughness in the middle of January, and our guys began to believe in each other. As a coach, there's nothing more satisfying than to see your players come together.
As the calendar moved from January to February, our team really showed some resilience. By no means were we a perfect team, but we scratched and clawed and never backed down – all key traits that I hope we will build upon into next season. Those are fundamental pillars of what I want this program to become. By the end of the season, our guys had built a belief that they simply weren't going to lose. Our players believed that losing was unacceptable. That is the competitive spirit we need in our program and something I expect us to have for as long as I'm the Bruins' head coach.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Your support to our team is vital. As our winning streak continued in late February, the atmosphere and energy in Pauley Pavilion picked up, and our players definitely noticed. How exciting was that to see Jaime Jaquez Jr. nail a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer against Arizona State? Or when our players joined the student section two nights later right after a thrilling comeback victory over Arizona? Our players and the students who were at those games will have those memories forever. Nights like those are what make college basketball so enjoyable for all of us.
We need to build upon that atmosphere when the 2020-21 season tips off next fall. Our program has a lot of work to accomplish before then, but I want you to know how much we appreciate your support. The passion from our fans for UCLA to reach that consistently elite level is extremely apparent. It's my goal as our head coach to get this program to that level. Thank you for your support, and see you in the fall. Go Bruins!
All My Best,
Mick Cronin
