LOS ANGELES – The UCLA track and field team will be represented by three individuals and two relay squads at the NCAA Indoor Championships (Mar. 13-14) in Albuquerque, N.M. Alyssa Wilson, Shae Anderson, and Kenroy Higgins II all individually qualified for nationals while the women's 4x400m relay and the men's DMR teams are also set to toe the line.
Per United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) guidelines, the top the nation's top 16 men's and women's individuals in each event qualify to compete at the National Championships. The top 12 men's and women's relay squads also make the cut.
Wilson makes her third-straight appearance at indoor nationals and qualified in the weight throw and shot put competitions. The junior from Jackson, N.J., has the second-best weight throw mark in the nation at 22.98m (75-04.75), a school-record launch she posted at the Don Kirby Invite in Albuquerque on Feb. 13. Wilson also enters nationals with the No. 8 national mark in the shot put. She threw 17.43m (57-02.25) for the event victory at the UW Indoor Preview (Jan. 18).Wilson's 2019 appearance at NCAA Indoors saw her take fourth place in the shot put (17.38m 57-00.25) and ninth in the weight throw (20.98m, 68-10).
Anderson, a school record holder in her own right, is set to compete in the women's 400m at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The Oregon transfer has had an impressive debut campaign for the Bruins, notching a pair of program indoor records in the 400m, most recently clocking a time of 52.07 at the Don Kirby Invite. The time at altitude was converted to 52.18, the ninth-ranked mark in the nation. Anderson competed at indoor nationals as a fresman at Oregon in 2008, finishing ninth overall in the 400m with a time of 52.69.
Sophomore Kenroy Higgins II is set to make is first appearance at indoor nationals, entering the meet with the seventh-ranked time in the nation in the 60m dash. Higgins went 6.59 at the Mounatin Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships on Feb. 28, good for second place overall and a school-record in the event. Higgins became the first Bruin to ever crack the 6.60 barrier in the 60m.
The Bruins are also sending a pair of relay squads to Albuquerque in the women's 4x400m squad and the men's DMR team. UCLA has had an historic year in the women's 4x4, with the team originally notching the No. 2 indoor mark in school history (3:33.98) at the Don Kirby Invite. The squad topped that performance with an indoor school-record time of 3:30.28 at the MPSF Championships. UCLA was one of two teams to break the Dempsey Indoor facility record at the league indoor championships, entering the national meet with the fifth-best time in the nation. The men's DMR holds the No. 9 time in the nation at 9:32.42. The Bruins notched the third-fastest time in school history with that performance at the Alex Wilson Invitational on Feb. 22.
