IRVING, Texas – The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced Wednesday that linebacker Josh Woods and long-snapper Johnny Den Bleyker have been selected to the 2020 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers. Selections must have completed their final season of collegiate eligibility in 2019.
"We are pleased to see another record number of athletes honored by the Hampshire Honor Society," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "Over the past decade, it has become a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these young men for the their commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives."
This past season, Woods saw action as a starter in all 12 games and topped the team with 4.5 sacks while finishing fourth on the squad in tackles (51). He keyed the Bruin comeback win at Washington State by making his first career interception in addition to being credited with a sack and two fumble recoveries. He recorded at least four tackles in nine games during the 2019 campaign and made a season-high 2.0 tackles for loss, including 1.5 sacks, at Stanford. The senior rated among the Pac-12 leaders in sacks per game (0.38) and fumbles recovered per game (0.17). He was named to the second-team 2019 all-conference unit chosen by the Associated Press and was presented the Ed "Coach K" Kezirian Award for Athletic and Academic Balance at the annual team banquet. A Sociology major, Woods merited a spot on the 2019 Pac-12 Fall Academic Honor Roll and was listed on the UCLA Athletic Director's Honor Roll in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Den Bleyker performed long snapper duties for the team for the fourth straight season in 2019. He saw action in all 12 games on special teams. In the game at USC last season, he was credited with a fumble recovery of a muffed punt. It marked the third time in his Bruin career, he had recovered a fumble in a game. Den Bleyker was named to the 2019 Pac-12 Fall Academic Honor Roll after being an honorable mention Academic All-Pac-12 selection in 2018. The Political Science major also has earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
