Bruin alums Katie Carter and Karsta Lowe are among a group of former collegiate athletes who will be taking part in the newest professional volleyball league, Athletes Unlimited Volleyball, which will begin next February.
The league, which will be based in the United States (city to be determined), will be officially sanctioned by USA Volleyball. The season will consist of six weeks of play where teams will change weekly.
Athletes Unlimited is getting underway with a softball season in August and September, with other sports potentially on the horizon.
Carter (2003-2006) played in 113 matches in her four years at UCLA, recording 824 kills, 239 digs, 209 blocks and 38 service aces. As a senior, she helped the Bruins to a trip to the National Semifinals, leading the team in hitting attempts and earning Third Team AVCA All-American honors and First Team All-Pac-10 accolades. After her days in Westwood, Carter continued her volleyball career overseas in 10 countries from 2007 to 2018.
"I have always been proud of where I come from," Carter said. "Being a Bruin instantly became part of my roots and a proud part of my past as soon as I graduated and continued to play professionally overseas. Now that I'm given the opportunity to play professionally in the United States with Athletes Unlimited, I'm even more proud to call UCLA my home."
Lowe (2011-2014), a National Champion in 2011 and a 2016 Olympic Bronze medalist, is 14th on UCLA's all-time kills list with 1,422, adding 368 digs, 202 blocks and 40 aces in 112 matches. Lowe also ranks fifth in kills per set (3.98) and seventh in points per set (4.40) at UCLA. She led the Bruins in kills in 2013 and 2014, including the second-most kills in a single season in UCLA history in her senior year (703). Lowe was named a First Team AVCA and VolleyballMag.com All-American in 2014 and an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American in 2013. She also earned AVCA First Team All-Region and All-Pac-12 First Team honors as a junior and senior, was a seven-time Pac-12 Player of the Week and was named a Third Team Academic All-American in 2014.
"Getting to play the sport I love in the United States brings back fond memories of my time at UCLA," Lowe said. "There is nothing like familiar faces and loved ones being able to make a short trip to see a match. I'll never take that for granted. UCLA laid down the foundation for my professional volleyball opportunities."
