LOS ANGELES -- UCLA's Alice and Nahum Lainer Family Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero was honored this morning by the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles with the 2020 Human Dignity Award. Guerrero accepted the award during the 49th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Brotherhood Breakfast celebrating exemplary community leaders whose work pays tribute to Dr. King's lifelong commitment to equality, social justice and community service.
Guerrero has served at the helm of UCLA Athletics for nearly 18 years, during which time the Bruins have won 32 NCAA team championships in 15 different sports – the most under any sitting NCAA Division I athletic director.
"Winning is great, but as the great Jackie Robinson said, 'A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives,' Guerrero said during his acceptance remarks. "I am moved by those student-athletes who've left Westwood with a world-class education and gone on to make a difference in their communities and in the world, those who have represented our University and their country at the highest levels of competition, and those who have been able to change the trajectories of their lives and the lives of others because of their experience at UCLA. It's truly a gift."
The annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Brotherhood Breakfast began in 1971 and honors Dr. King's legacy and vision of a just and inclusive world for all. With a mission to strengthen communities, the Y understands, as Dr. King did, that lasting social change can only be achieved when everyone works together. Also honored at today's breakfast was another Bruin, Christine Simmons, Chief Operating Officer for The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Simmons received the 2020 YMCA Brotherhood Award.
Former UCLA quarterback Cade McNown introduced Guerrero and presented him with the award, along with a surprise performance by the UCLA Marching Band. McNown described Guerrero as, "never trying to be up front, never trying to be the guy who's visible, who's seen, and has just quietly gone about his job…. representing the school in such a bold, courageous, humble way." McNown concluded by saying "I am just so thankful to be associated with a university that has held this man in such high regard for so very long and I'm very proud to be up here today."
