Bruins Fall in Heartbreaker to USC, Suffer First Loss of the Season
January 17, 2020 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – The No. 7/8 UCLA women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the 2019-20 season Friday, losing to USC, 70-68, in double overtime. The Bruins move to 16-1 overall and 5-1 in Conference play. The Trojans improved to 9-8 and earned their first Pac-12 victory (1-5).
The Bruins were led by senior guard Japreece Dean, who put up a team-high 24 points and added 10 rebounds for the double-double. Freshman guard Charisma Osborne notched a career-high 20 points—18 after the first half—in the loss.
Aliyah Jeune was unstoppable for the Trojans, as she put up 27 points and 13 rebounds for her first-career double-double. Alissa Pili was just as strong, registering 19 points and 17 boards for USC.
UCLA opened the first quarter hot, taking an early 6-0 lead behind buckets from three different Bruins, but the Trojans answered with a quick 9-2 run to take their first lead of the night. It was a back-and-forth affair for the rest of the opening frame with the Trojans taking a 16-15 lead into the second quarter. Dean and junior guard Chantel Horvat led the Bruins with four points each in the first quarter.
The Bruins couldn't buy a bucket in the second quarter, as Dean's two free throws at the 9:01 mark were the only points UCLA would score in the frame. The Trojans would, ultimately, outscore the Bruins 14-2 in the second and take a 30-17 lead at the break. Despite the low point totals, six Bruins scored in the opening half.
Junior forward Lauryn Miller opened the scoring in the second half after a slick post feed from Dean, but the Trojans, once again, answered with a quick 6-0 run. The Bruins weren't going to give in, as Dean's and-one lay-up and two buckets from Osborne cut USC's lead to 36-26. After the Bruins forced a stop on the defensive end, Dean found Horvat running the floor in transition for the easy two, forcing a USC timeout at the 6:04 mark. UCLA would go on to outscore the Trojans 13-7 after the stoppage and cut the deficit to two points (43-41) heading into the fourth quarter. Osborne was sensational in the frame, putting up 12 points in the third, including a pair of three-pointers, on 5-for-7 shooting.
UCLA looked to seize momentum to start the fourth, opening the frame on a quick 5-0 run to take a 46-43 lead with 8:54 to play. It was the first lead for the Bruins since the 4:18 mark in the first quarter. After the teams exchanged baskets until the media stoppage, Dean hit a leaner off a well-designed inbound play to extend the Bruins' lead to 50-46 (4:26). The Trojans wouldn't go away and went on to tie the score at 51 at the 50-second mark with a pair of Kayla Overbeck free throws. After Dean just missed a three at the other end, she took matters into her own hands on the defensive end and drew a charge with 3.5 seconds remaining. Osborne came up just short on her game-winning shot attempt and the game would head to overtime.
The first overtime period saw the Bruins exchange baskets until the Trojans took a three-point lead with six seconds left after a pair of Desiree Caldwell free throws. The Bruins had one final possession and certainly made it count, as Dean found Natalie Chou on a beautiful skip pass to the corner, and Chou drained the three as time expired.
The Bruins seized momentum to start the second overtime, going on a 7-1 run to open the frame. USC fired right back with seven straight points to take a 67-66 lead with 1:10 left. Dean sliced through the paint for the lay-in at the other end, but Pili responded with a three-point play to put the Trojans up 70-68 with 27 seconds left. That proved to be the decisive blow as the Bruins couldn't convert at the other end, solidifying the final score.
