January 22, 2020 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – UCLA junior outfielder Garrett Mitchell and junior right-handed pitcher Holden Powell have both been named Preseason All-Americans by D1Baseball, it was announced on Wednesday.
Both Bruin standouts were named to the First Team. It's the third Preseason All-America honor for both, as both were previously honored by Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America.
A season ago, Powell was voted as the nation's top relief pitcher by the NCBWA and was also a unanimous All-America selection. The Visalia, Calif. native had 17 saves, second-most in the nation and in UCLA single-season history. Powell logged a 1.84 ERA and struck out 65 batters in 49 innings.
Mitchell had a breakout sophomore campaign in 2019, slashing .349/.418/.566 en route to All-America honors. The Orange, Calif. native proved himself as an all-around threat last year, clubbing six home runs, setting a UCLA single-season record with 12 triples, playing lockdown defense in the outfield, and stealing 18 bases. He enters his junior season as the No. 6 prospect in the 2020 draft per MLB Pipeline.
UCLA unofficially opens the 2020 campaign this Saturday with the program's annual alumni game. Cincinnati Reds starter Trevor Bauer is scheduled to make an appearance in the game, which begins at 12:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Admission and parking are both free.
The Bruins are coming off a 2019 season that ranks among the most successful in program history. UCLA tallied a school-record 52 wins, had its highest winning percentage since 1924 (.828), was selected as the No. 1 national seed in the NCAA Tournament, and had a program record 13 players selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft.
