MVB Deals Buckeyes First Loss

The No. 6 UCLA men's volleyball team (4-2) handed Ohio State (6-1) its first loss of the season at the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge played at University Park, Pa. Scores of the match were 25-16, 24-26, 25-16, 25-17. The Bruins who rode a season-best 13 service aces to the victory, will now head home to host No. 13 Princeton on Thursday night in the John Wooden Center at 7 p.m.
UCLA opened up set one with a flurry and owned a 7-3 lead after a kill from Austin Matautia. The lead was 10-5 following an ace from Matt Younggren. Daniel Matheney and Matautia teamed up on a block for a 13-6 advantage. UCLA grew the gap to 17-10 on a kill from Cole Ketrzynski. A Matautia swing made it 20-12 and Alex Knight's putaway gave the first set to the Bruins 25-16. UCLA hit .640 for the set, with just one error on 25 attempts.
In set two, UCLA moved to a 4-1 early margin after an ace from Mads Kyed Jensen. Ohio State closed to 8-7 and then Matautia and Kyed Jensen answered with kills for a 10-7 margin. The Buckeyes came back to pull within one again at 14-13, before the Bruins rallied to register four straight on a service error, ace by Knight, block by Matautia/Younggren and a Younggren kill. Ohio State chipped away to even the score at 21. The score was then tied at points 22, 23 and 24. Each team had a look at set point before the Buckeyes put two together for a 24-26 win. Ohio State hit .429 for the set, while UCLA swung at a .259 clip.
Ohio State established the early lead in set three. UCLA evened the score at 6-all after a kill from Ketrzynski. The Bruins used a four-point run to break a 9-all tie and open up the set with a kill and block from Matheney, an ace from Kyed Jensen and another Ketrzynski kill. Matuatia fired off three straight aces to increase the margin to 16-11. Knight then delivered a kill and two straight aces for a 23-14 edge. Another Matautia swing put away the Buckeyes 25-16. UCLA hit .550 for the set with six aces.
Ohio State broke an early tie with a three-point run for a 4-7 advantage. UCLA came back to even the score at 8-all on a block by Matheney/Ketryzynski/Matautia which was the first of five straight points for the Bruins. The trio teamed up for another block to end that run with UCLA in front 12-8. OSU closed to 14-12 after its first ace of the contest. UCLA battled back on a couple of kills by Kyed Jensen to take a 19-14 lead. Back-to-back aces from Younggren lifted the Bruins into a 23-15 advantage. A couple of Matheney kills then wrapped up the set and match at 25-17.
Ketrzynski led UCLA with 17 kills (.400) followed in double-digit kills by Knight 13 (.478) and Matautia 10 (.412). Kyed Jensen topped the Bruins with four of the team total of 13 aces. Matautia added four block assists and seven digs to lead the team in both categories. UCLA hit .489 for the contest to .271 for the Buckeyes. The Bruins won the block battle 7.5 to 6.0.
