MVB Hosts Princeton on Thursday; at Long Beach Saturday

COMING UP-- UCLA (4-2), ranked No. 8 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, will host No. 13 Princeton (2-3, with match vs. UCSD on Tuesday) on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the John Wooden Center before heading back on the road to play at No. 4 Long Beach State (5-0) on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. 
The Bruins had mixed results at the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge at Penn State last weekend - dropping a 0-3 decision to No. 10 Penn State (22-25, 27-29, 24-26) on Friday before handing Ohio State its first loss (25-16, 24-26, 25-16, 25-17) of the season on Sunday. Cole Ketrzynski was named Off the Block's National Freshman of the week after totaling 27 kills in the two matches, included a season-high tying 17 in the win over the Buckeyes.

LAST MEETING -- UCLA defeated Princeton (25-17, 26-24, 33-35, 16-25, 15-10) in New Jersey on Jan. 6 in the third match of the 2020 season. Cole Ketrzynski led UCLA with 17 kills and six blocks. The Bruins opened the 2019 season against Princeton with a 25-17, 26-24, 25-18 Bruin win. Princeton and UCLA have played in each of the last six seasons, all Bruin wins (6-0). 
UCLA has dropped its last six meetings with the Beach. The last win by the Bruins in the series was in a 2016 MPSF Playoff semifinal match held at BYU. UCLA defeated the Beach three times that season (at home, away, neutral sites). Last season, Long Beach won in the Pyramid (20-25, 17-25, 19-25) on Feb. 16 and at Pauley Pavilion (27-29, 22-25, 17-25) on Jan. 19.
NOTES -- In matches it has won, UCLA is outhitting the opponent .377 to .179 and leading at the service line 43 aces to 10 --- in losses, UCLA is hitting .264 to .423 for its opponents and opponents own a 13 aces to 12 advantage at the service line ... Penn State hit an even .500 in its win over the Bruins, the last time an opponent hit at least .500 against the Bruins was Pepperdine in a Feb. 23, 2018 match in Malibu (.553) ... The Bruins enter the week leading the nation in aces per set (2.47), with Mads Kyed Jensen second in the nation with a 0.88 mark and Austin Matautia T12th at 0.65 ... UCLA had a season-high 13 aces in its win over Ohio State ... Matt Younggren had a career-high three aces in that win ... Mads Kyed Jensen has at least four aces in four matches this season (Daemen-4, Princeton-5, Penn State-5, Ohio State-4) ... Alex Knight totaled career-high numbers for kills (13) and service aces (3) in the win over the Buckeyes and has handled 49 of his last 50 serve receptions without error ... Cole Ketrzynski's 17 kills at Princeton were the most by a Bruin true freshman player since Micah Ma'a put down 18 balls against Hawai'i in February of 2016 (he also had 17 kills in the win over Ohio State) ... Austin Matautia tallied a career-high tying four block assists in the win over Ohio State and had a career-best four aces in the win at George Mason ... The Bruins used 15 players the opener at Daemen ... Five -- Cole Ketrzynski, Alex Knight (team-high six kills), Cole Power, Daniel Matheney, Mads Kyed Jensen -- made their collegiate debuts in the match ... Sam Burgi saw his first action at George Mason and Kevin Kobrine debuted at UCSD ... The last time UCLA held an opponent below .000 hitting% prior to Daemen (-.081) was in 2015 (Cal Baptist -.011) ... UCLA was ranked No. 2 in the AVCA poll to open the season for the second consecutive year ... The Bruins finished No. 7 in the final 2019 AVCA Coaches poll ...  UCLA has ended a season ranked No. 1 in the AVCA poll a record nine times (1987, 1989, 1993, 1994, 1995,1996, 1998, 2000, 2006) ... In 2019, the Bruins finished 9-9 against teams ranked in the AVCA poll at the time of the match ... Daenan Gyimah has earned first-team AVCA All-America honors in each of the last two seasons and also has been the recipient of the Ryan Millar Award as the nation's top middle attacker. 
NCAA STATS -- UCLA leads the nation in aces average (2.47) and is 11th in hitting % .307 ... Last season, UCLA finished fifth in the nation in hitting percentage (.323) and fifth in aces per set (1.73). 
ON THE ROAD -- UCLA, 4-2 so far in 2020, was 7-7 on the road last season, with a 2-1 mark in neutral site contests. 
AT HOME -- UCLA was 10-1 at home (7-1 in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom, 3-0 in the Wooden Center) last season ... UCLA has won its last nine matches played in the Wooden Center (last loss was to Hawai'i in the 2017 regular season finale). Over the past four seasons, UCLA is 38-5 in Pauley (2016: 10-1, 2017: 8-1, 2018: 13-2, 2019: 7-1).
