Six Bruins Named to D1Baseball Top-150 Lists
January 29, 2020 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ Six members of the UCLA baseball team were highlighted as D1Baseball released its lists of the Top-150 Hitters and Pitchers in the college ranks this week.
Four pitchers made the cut for the top-150, including senior Kyle Mora (No. 58), sophomore Jesse Bergin (75), junior Holden Powell (90), and junior Zach Pettway (146).
A pair of Bruin position players were included as well, both inside the top-100. Junior outfielder Garrett Mitchell (No. 37) was first followed by sophomore catcher Noah Cardenas (54).
The lists were conducted using analytics, focusing on different data points for pitchers and position players while adjusting for park effects and quality of competition. Hitters were graded on plate discipline, hit ability, and game power while pitchers were judged on zone control, pitchability, and durability.
The inclusion on the top-150 extends the growing list of preseason accolades for UCLA baseball players.
Mitchell has been a consensus Preseason All-America pick to this point of the offseason, while Powell has also been tabbed First Team Preseason All-America by Perfect Game and D1Baseball.
Bergin is coming off a Freshman All-American season that saw him post a 5-0 record, Mora led the NCAA in appearances last year with 47 en route to a 2.09 ERA, Pettway was the 2019 Opening Day Starter and owns a 3.83 career ERA, and Cardenas batted a team-high .375 last season while handling the nation's top pitching staff as part of a breakout freshman campaign.
UCLA officially opens the 2020ย season at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Feb. 14ย by hosting UC Riverside. Single-game and season tickets for the upcoming campaign are now available, and can be purchased by calling 310-UCLA-WIN or clickingย HERE.ย
