MVB Takes Down Patriots in Straight Sets

The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team continued its eastern road swing by defeating George Mason in straight sets, on Saturday night in Fairfax, Va. Scores of the match were 25-22, 30-28, 25-23. UCLA improved to 2-0 on the year and will now travel to New Jersey to take on No. 10 Princeton (0-3) on Monday at 11 a.m. PT.
In set one, UCLA fell behind early as George Mason surged to a 4-8 lead. The Bruins closed to 7-10 after a Matt Younggren kill. UCLA battled back to even the score at 14-all. Daenan Gyimah's ace lifted UCLA into an 18-15 advantage. Austin Matautia's swing on an overpass made it 22-17. Gyimah closed out the Patriots in set one with a kill for a 25-22 decision. Alex Knight and Matautia led UCLA with three kills each for the frame.
UCLA tied the score at 3-all, in set two, on Sam Burgi's kill. George Mason then rattled off five of the next six points for a 4-8 lead. After the Patriots opened up the margin to 9-14, UCLA closed the gap and trailed 12-15 following a Matautia kill. Another swing from Matautia brought UCLA within a point, at 17-18. Mads Kyed Jensen / Gyimah teamed up for a block to bring the Bruins even at 19. A Younggren kill fought off a set point and leveled the score at 25-all. UCLA moved ahead 26-25 on a Matatutia kill but could not close out the Patriots. Gyimah's kill did the trick and UCLA captured the set 30-28.
George Mason secured the early advantage in set three at 4-6. UCLA closed to 5-6 after an ace from Gyimah. The Bruins still trailed 8-10 after a kill from Younggren. Down 9-13, UCLA rallied to even the score at 16 on a kill from Matautia. Jensen's ace tied the score at 19. Another ace, this one by Matatutia, put the Bruins in front 22-20. Knight's kill off the block ended the match at 25-23.
UCLA outhit the Patriots .299 to .177 and out aced the home team 8 to 2. George Mason had 8 total blocks to 5 for UCLA. Gyimah paced the Bruin attack with 12 kills while hitting .381. Knight added nine kills. Matautia registered a career-high four aces to go with eight kills. Cole Pender led UCLA with seven digs. Burgi totaled two kills in his first action for the Bruins.
