Bruins Drop Double-Overtime Thriller to Stanford, 48-47

December 19, 2020 | Football

Brittain Brown ran the ball 29 times for 219 yards, and the Bruins scored 31 unanswered points in the second half to take the lead, but Stanford rallied back and defeated UCLA in double overtime, 48-47, on Saturday at the Rose Bowl in the season finale for both teams.

The Bruins rushed for a season-high 291 yards. Chase Griffin spelled an injured Dorian Thompson-Robinson and threw for four touchdowns, going 9-of-11 for 127 yards. Kyle Philips caught seven passes for 61 yards and a score, while Greg Dulcich had a pair of touchdown receptions. Thompson-Robinson was 8-of-12 for 65 yards, adding 46 yards on the ground, before leaving the game late in the first half. Caleb Johnson led the defense with 10 tackles. Elijah Gates, Mo Osling III and Jay Shaw each had interceptions, with Shaw's going for a pick-six.

After Stanford found the end zone on its opening drive, UCLA cracked the scoreboard on its second turn with the football. Starting at their own 25, the Bruins drove 61 yards in seven plays, but saw an Ethan Fernea touchdown called back following a holding penalty. UCLA picked up four first downs on the drive, with Thompson-Robinson accounting for 56 of the yards, 29 through the air and 27 on the ground. The Bruins settled for a 31-yard field goal by Nicholas Barr-Mira to make it 7-3 with 1:21 left in the first quarter.

Stanford's second drive was nearly as successful as its first, as the Cardinal found the end zone again, going ahead 13-3, but missing the extra point. The visitors tacked on another touchdown to end the half, taking a 20-3 advantage into the locker room.

UCLA's defense rose up though in the second half, as the Bruins forced a punt and then scored their first touchdown of the game. UCLA kept the ball on the ground, gaining 57 yards. Four carries in a row by Brown, including a 29-yard scamper, got the Bruins into Stanford territory. After a rush by Keegan Jones and a roughing the passer penalty on the Cardinal, Jones carried it in from nine yards out to make it 20-10 with 9:10 left in the third quarter.

Stanford's next possession resulted in an interception by Gates, and nine plays later, the Bruins were back in the end zone. After 34 yards rushing over five Brown carries, Griffin completed three passes in a row, eight- and 14-yard receptions to Philips and a 17-yard touchdown throw to Dulcich to make it 20-17 with 7:19 remaining in the third.

The Bruins made it back-to-back Stanford possessions with an interception, as Osling III got a pick near midfield. It took just four plays to give the home team their first lead of the game. Following a two-yard gain for Brown and an 18-yard rush by Griffin, Brown broke free for a 41-yard dash to the Stanford 23 to end the third quarter. Then Griffin opened the fourth with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Chase Cota to put the Bruins ahead 24-20.

UCLA forced another Stanford punt and took 4:30 off the clock during its next drive, which spanned 10 plays and 46 yards and resulted in another Barr-Mira 31-yard field goal. Brown had runs of 11 and 16 yards during the drive, while Jones added a 16-yard run.

Three plays later, the Bruins were back in the end zone thanks to their third interception of the second half. Shaw sat on the route and took it 39 yards to the house to put UCLA up 34-20 with 5:39 left in regulation. Stanford would come back to tie the game though and force overtime with touchdowns on its last two drives of regulation.

The Bruins got the ball first in overtime and scored on the second play, as Griffin and Dulcich hooked up again, this time on a 21-yard reception. The Cardinal scored on the seventh play of their overtime drive to force a second extra session.

Stanford took the lead with a touchdown in the second overtime and UCLA scored six when Griffin connected to Philips on a 21-yard reception. However, the Bruins failed on their two-point conversion to lose by one.
