Wilson Breaks School Record on Day One of Don Kirby Invite
February 13, 2020 | Track & Field
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. โ Alyssa Wilson stole the show on day one of the Don Kirby Elite Invitational, setting a new school record in the women's weight throw with a launch of 22.98m (75-04.75) on her final throw of the afternoon. The mark breaks former Bruin great Ida Storm's previous record of 74-00.25, set back in March of 2015.
ย
Today's performance marks Wilson's second UCLA school record, as she notched the Bruins' greatest all-time hammer throw mark (70.63m, 231-08) at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at Drake Stadium in April 2019. Wilson also boasts the No. 2 all-time UCLA marks in the indoor and outdoor shot put competitions, as well as the No. 4 mark in the discus.
ย
The junior's record-setting throw was good for the win in today's competition and is the nation's leading mark in the weight throw this year. Wilson has been on a tear throughout the 2020 indoor season, as today's performance marked her fourth weight throw victory and eighth overall win of the year. The Jackson, N.J., native is back in action tomorrow morning for the shot put competition at 8:30 a.m. MT/7:30 a.m. PT.

Senior Harrison Schrage led the Bruins' contingent with a third-place finish (7.45m, 24-05.50) while junior Matthew DeRoos (6.96m, 22-10.00) and redshirt freshman Alex Enos (6.94m, 22-09.25) took 14th and 15th place, respectively.
ย
The women's competition saw Jai Gruenwald (5.64m, 18-06.00) and Isa Videler (18-04.50) take 20th and 26th for the Bruins, respectively.

Okoro had the fastest time of the day among underclassmen. Fellow first-year Maddy Doane also toed the line in the 200, clocking a personal-best 24.47 for 16th place overall and third place among freshmen.

A quartet of Bruin freshmen โ Camryn Thomson, Mia Cervantes, Isabella Grant, and Eden โ competed in the women's pole vault Friday.
