February 14, 2020 | Track & Field
Albuquerque, N.M. – Redshirt sophomore Shae Anderson had a dominant day at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational, breaking her own UCLA indoor 400m record and helping the women's 4x400m squad to the No. 2 all-time indoor mark in school history. As a team, the Bruins compiled six UCLA top-10 indoor marks across the Don Kirby Invite and the Husky Classic today.
DON KIRBY ELITE INVITATIONAL
Anderson opened her performance in the 400m, where posted a lifetime-best time of 52.06 to win the event and become the first UCLA woman in history to duck under 53 seconds in indoor competition. She bettered her previous school record of 53.46 (Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge – Jan. 25) by over a second and notched the national-leading time in the event.
This is the second school record posted by the Bruins at the Don Kirby Invite, as junior thrower Alyssa Wilson launched 22.98m (74-04.75) to set UCLA's all-time record in the weight throw Thursday afternoon and post the best collegiate mark in the nation.
Anderson went on to compete in the 4x400m relay with freshmen Catherine Leger and Makenzy Pierre-Webster and senior Meleni Rodney. The quartet was firing on all cylinders and blazed to a time of 3:33.98, the second-fastest time in UCLA indoor history and the fastest time for the program since 2003.
The Bruin sprinters were further active in the 60m dash, as sophomores Kenroy Higgins II (6.66) and Myles Webb (6.73) finished in third and fifth place in the men's competition, respectively. Webb notched the third-fastest preliminary time at 6.69, the fourth-fastest time in program history. Higgins' 6.64 time from the UW Indoor Preview (Jan. 18) as the No. 2 mark in UCLA history. Senior Harrison Schrage and junior Matthew DeRoos each posted personal-best times, going 6.81 and 6.86, respectively.
Sophomore Kenyla Miles advanced to the final in the women's 60m competition, finishing fifth overall with a time of 7.46. Miles posted a time of 7.44 in the qualifying heats to move into sixth place all-time on the UCLA 60m list. Freshman Chinyere Okoro also toed the line for the Bruins in the event and clocked a time of 7.49, just missing out on the final with a 10th-place finish in the qualifier.
HUSKY CLASSIC
Redshirt senior Colin Burke posted a classy third-place performance in the men's 5000m, cracking the 13:50.00 barrier for the first time in his career with a time of 13:47.77. The time moved Burke from sixth to second place on UCLA's all-time indoor 5k list.
Junior Christina Rice continued her impressive 2020 season with a fourth-place finish in the women's 5k, clocking a lifetime-best time of 16:16.84.
