Distance Squad, Wilson Finish Up Weekend Competitions

SEATTLE, WASH. โ€“ The UCLA distance team finished up its weekend at the Husky Classic, coming away with impressive times across the board and a trio of top-10 all-time UCLA indoor performances. Junior Thrower Alyssa Wilson also competed in the weight throw at the 2020 Toyota USATF Indoor National Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.

Senior Arturo Sotomayor had a career day in the men's mile, taking 18th place overall with a lifetime-best time of 4:01.63. Sotomayor improved his indoor PR in the event by almost three seconds and moved into fifth place in UCLA indoor history. Junior Chris Morzenti notched his third mile PR of the 2020 indoor season with a time of 4:03.75, the No. 8 time on UCLA's all-time indoor list. Senior George Gleason also toed the line for the Bruins, clocking a time of 4:06.49 for 44th place.

Additional trio of Bruins โ€“ Gwyneth George, Paige Carter, and Lilly Schmidt โ€“ competed in the women's mile and each of them ducked under five minutes. George led the way with a 39th-place finish and a time of 4:51.78. Carter posted a big PR with a time of 4:56.53, while Schmidt cracked the 5:00.00 barrier (4:57.08) in her first appearance in the mile for the Bruins.

The men's 800m saw Riley Kelly post an impressive fourth-place performance with a season-best time of 1:49.25. Kelly's performance moves him into eighth place all-time in UCLA indoor history in the event. Freshman Morgan Calcagnie toed the line in the women's competition and came away with a time of 2:13.66. ย

2020 TOYOTA USATF INDOOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Wilson capped her impressive throwing weekend with a second-place showing in the weight throw at Indoor Nationals in Albuquerque, tossing the implement 22.80m (74-09.75).

This was the junior's second appearance in the weight throw this weekend, as Wilson notched a school-record performance in the event at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational (Thursday, Feb. 3) with a toss of 22.98m (75-04.75).

UP NEXT
The UCLA track and field squad is back in action next weekend at the Alex Wilson Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. The meet program is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 22.
