Bruins Send Distance Contingent to Alex Wilson Invite

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA track and field team has its lightest weekend of competition thus far in the 2020 indoor season, as the Bruins are sending a small contingent of distance runners to the Alex Wilson Invitational at the University of Notre Dame. The competition is slated for Saturday, Feb. 22 and held at Meyo Field in the Loftus Sports Center.

Distance Medley Relay (12:10 p.m. ET/9:10 a.m. PT)
UCLA is scheduled to send out Arturo Sotomayor, Ismail Turner, Riley Kelly, and Chris Morzenti for the men's DMR. Sotomayor and Morzenti are each coming off career performances in the mile at the Husky Classic (Feb. 14) in Seattle, going 4:01.63 and 4:03.05, respectively. Kelly notched an indoor-best time of 1:49.25 in the 800m in Seattle, while Turner's 21.54 time at the New Mexico Collegiate Challenge (Feb. 8) in Albuquerque was good for a collegiate best. ย

Mile (1:35 p.m. ET/10:35 a.m. PT)
Senior George Gleason and freshman Mason Ratkovich toe the line in the men's mile for the Bruins. Gleason is coming off his first appearance in the mile in 2020, posting a time of 4:06.49 at the Husky Classic (Feb. 15). Ratkovich is slated to run his first competitive mile for UCLA.

800m (2:05 p.m. ET/11:05 a.m. PT)
Ratkovich also gets the start for the Bruins in the men's 800m. Ratkovich enters with a pair of 800m appearances for the Bruins this year, clocking a personal best of 1:53.23 at the UW Invitational (Feb. 1).

3000m (3:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m. PT)
Gleason is also entered in the men's 3k. The senior enters the day with a personal best of 8:13.67 in the event, which he posted back in 2017 at the MPSF Indoor Championships.

BRUINS IN THE RANKINGS
The UCLA women's squad made an impressive jump in the latest United States Track and Field & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll, moving up 17 spots to check in at No. 16 overall. It was the highest national placement for the women's program since 2015.

The Bruin men are currently sixth in both the West Region and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) rankings.

LAST TIME OUT
The Bruins competed at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., and Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., last weekend and came away with some historic performances in both meets.

Redshirt sophomore Shae Anderson and junior Alyssa Wilson stole the show in Albquerque ,aas both student-athletes notched school-record performances. Anderson won the women's 400m competition and demolished her own indoor school record, clocking a time of 52.07 to become the first Bruin woman to ever duck under 53 seconds in indoor competition. Anderson went on to help the 4x400m squad to an event victory and a time of 3:33.98, the second-fastest indoor time in school history.

Wilson dominated the women's weight throw, going 22.98m (75-04.75) for the event win and UCLA record. Wilson now owns a pair of school records, as the junior already held the best hammer throw mark in UCLA history (70.63m, 231-09), set at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational in April, 2019.

The Husky Classic saw the Bruin distance team shake up the UCLA record books. Christina Rice (9:20.02) and Colin Burke (7:59.34) each posted lifetime bests in their respective 3000m races, moving into third and fifth place, respectively, on the UCLA all-time indoor list.

The Bruins are headed back to Dempsey Indoor in Seattle for the MPSF Indoor Championships next weekend, a two-day meet slated to kick off of Friday, Feb. 28. The 2019 league indoor championships saw the UCLA men finish second overall, the team's highest finish since 2010. The Bruin women finished 13th.
