Successful Start to 2020
UCLA had an impressive start to the new season this past weekend, sweeping Big West-member UC Riverside and outscoring them 21-3 on aggregate for the weekend. It was the third consecutive season in which UCLA swept its opening series and the sixth time overall in the John Savage era (since 2005). The Bruins allowed just 12 hits over the weekend to the Highlanders, including a combined three-hitter on Saturday and a combined two-hitter in the Sunday finale.
First Things First
UCLA has dominated the first inning of games to this point in the season. Over the first four games of the year, UCLA has scored 10 runs on 10 hits including a five-spot against Loyola Marymount on Tuesday. Offensively, the Bruins have scored multiple runs three times in the first inning. Meanwhile, UCLA pitchers have gone three-up, three-down in the top of the first in every game so far, allowing not a single baserunner.
History Against St. Mary's
UCLA has a 17-26 all-time record in the series against St. Mary's, which dates back to 1928. The Bruins and Gaels have played just four times since 1981, matching up in a weekend series in 2008 and then again during the Dodgertown Classic in 2011. UCLA took two of three from SMC in the 2008 series, winning the first two games of the series and outscoring the visitors 23-10 for the weekend. The Bruins then topped the Gaels 10-2 on Mar. 12, 2011 in the second game of that year's Dodger Stadium tournament.
Week In Review
The Bruins opened the season with four wins in as many games, sweeping a weekend series with UC Riverside before routing Loyola Marymount 10-1 in a Tuesday night midweek. UCLA outscored UCR 21-3 on the weekend and allowed just 12 hits overall. The Bruins then soundly defeated LMU at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Tuesday, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first and then throwing a combined two-hitter in the 10-1 triumph.
Pitching Off To A Hot Start
A year after leading the NCAA in team ERA, UCLA's pitching staff is off to a great start to the 2020 campaign. To this point in the year, the Bruins rank second nationally in team ERA at 1.00, and lead the country in hits allowed per nine innings (3.5) and WHIP (0.58). The hot start is nothing new - UCLA allowed just three runs and 13 hits through its first four games last year.
Bruins In The Polls
UCLA was represented in all five major national polls this week. The Bruins are ranked as high as No. 8 (ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, which hasn't been updated since the preseason poll) and also appear at No. 10 (Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball), No. 11 (NCBWA), and No. 14 (D1Baseball). St. Mary's is unranked.
Slick Gloves
UCLA went its entire opening series without committing an error. That is the first time the Bruins went without committing an error in their first series of the year under John Savage (since 2005).
Back to Back
Freshman Michael Curialle and sophomore Matt McLain launched solo homers in back-to-back fashion during the first inning of Sunday's series finale against UCR. The pair of jacks represented UCLA's first set of back-to-back homers since Michael Toglia and Chase Strumpf did so on May 21, 2017 against Utah.
Hot At Home
UCLA is 4-0 at home this year and has gone 74-25 (.747) at Jackie Robinson Stadium since the start of the 2017 season. Dating back to 2017, the Bruins have won 18 consecutive regular season series on their home field, with their last loss coming to Oregon State (Apr. 21-13, 2017).
A Year Of Firsts
With six new starters in the Opening Day lineup, there have been plenty of opportunies for Bruins to record career firsts:
While UCLA's starters have been impressive in their own right, UCLA's bullpen has been downright unhittable, tossing 15 innings of scoreless relief with just three hits against on the season. Junior Michael Townsend (three separate scoreless appearances of an inning apiece, just one baserunner allowed) and junior closer Holden Powell (2.1 IP, one save, five strikeouts) have been especially impressive out of the pen.
